I just listened to a copy of Holst's Symphony of Planets. I had only listened to Mars, Jupiter and Venus before, but I have to say all the movements are wonderful. I think John Williams really borrowed from Mars and Jupiter quite a bit when he composed the theme to Star Wars. So, if you like the soundtrack to the movie, you'll really like Holst's Planets.

Anyone else here like classical? Have you listened to The Planets? If so, what did you think? Also, are there any other astronomy/science themed pieces you care to suggest?

I also love the opening theme from STDS9.

ETA: Here's the link to the album on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Holst-The-Pla...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1227021284&sr=8-1

Huh, Apparently each theme is related to the astrological significance of each planet, I always thought it was related to the Greek/Roman god each was named for. Oh well, it's still a really beautiful symphony

I don't think John Williams borrowed from them at all, he's not a thief.

He may have been inspired by them.

I didn't say he was. I suppose adapted would be more accurate, though.

I prefer Isao Tomita's performance using synthesizers. I think it's appropriate for this piece.
