Well, sure. I mean, sure governments lie constantly, but there are some things you really trust in. Elvis is dead. Benedict Arnold was a loyal Englishman. The Russians have Hitler's head. It all made some kind of sense, somehow. But now this is a lie, too? What's next? Walt Disney isn't frozen?
For the love of God, we're talking about the Russians. The people in charge of the storage facility probably lost the original skull fragment, or were playing round with it and broke it or whatever... ...and fearing a surprise visit by Uncle Joe - coming down to the sub-sub-sub basement in a drunken reverie to gloat over the bit of bone representing his triumph over his hated rival, perhaps - just went out and shot the first person they came across (some poor, unfortunate street whore or char woman, say) & put the bit of their noggin with the bullet hole in it into the drawer where Hitler's was supposed to be kept... ...after all, what were the chances some meddling "archaeologist and bone specialist" was going to come along 60-odd years later to test the bloody thing ! Then again, maybe some wiseass just put a hunk of Fanny Kaplan's skull in there !
Is there any reason to assume they intentionally lied? And Killjoy makes a good point. Why do we assume that the Russians had the correct skull ever?
This is what I mean. So why do we hold to our beliefs. Clearly Soviet archivists, much to our general surprise, may have played a little loose with the origin of a few things. So why do we cling to the idea that anything is as previously advertised? Hope? Fear? Because we enjoy the sensation of friction against its leg?
I have honestly never believed that Hitler killed himself in that bunker. He was too arrogant for that. My inclination was that they used that story to both assure people that everything was OK now since the monster is dead, and as a bonus, look how cowardly he REALLY WAS!
