What I don't like about member anonymity is it's very hard figuring out what sex that member is unless they say something that would indicate it. But that's not very often.

Is there a feature on SciForums where the member's sex can be displayed?

I wouldn't care to post here, but as I have been mistaken to be a man a couple of times lately, I had quite an amusement at it ...

Ah, who cares? But it would be handy if there was something in the profile about gender and not only about biography, occupation and so on.

Back when I just started posting I wanted to appear as a man, and did so very successfully. Therefore, even when they do tell you what gender they are, you're still in the dark.

Who cares about age+gender+etc? Well, if you're planning to meet the person, yes, that would matter. But that's not what sciforums is for.

That's nothing hard. Most of the readers of my lv weblog think I'm a girl.

Gender can matter when you want to refer to someone... it can be awful awkward to say "she" when the person you're talking about is in fact a man, or vice versa.

hmm, I don't see a problem in that.
and you can always refer using the name only.

    Ya don't?!

Ya know what Avatar did yesterday? Avatar saw whitewolf at the coffee shop. Avatar asked whitewolf what whitewolf was gonna do tomorrow, and whitewolf told Avatar that whitewolf was planning to see Avatar again at that same coffee shop. Avatar realized that Avatar has an appointment at that time and can't make it. Avatar tells whitewolf this, and whitewolf changes whitewolf's plans so that whitewolf can see whitewolf's parents at that time.

    Like that?

Actually, I kind of prefer gender anonymity, because people are more receptive to opinions when they don't expect others to fit into a mold (subconsciously or not..).

It would be very helpful to know the gender of members, so I can know if their posts are worth reading or not

Deities are usually known by multiple names. You can refer to me as Whitewolf, The Omniscient, The Omnipotent, etc. Gets your imagination going.

Besides, "he-she" or "it" isn't hard to type out, is it?

There is no value in gender. What matters is the information that an individual can provide, nothing more.

Right, on this board, only the mind of someone, not his dick/her vagina, is the important thing.

It's not, but it's also unnecessary to type "(s)he" and "him/her" when I could know which one to use. Also, "it" is disrespectful, in my opinion.

I agree with both of ya, but it would be nice to know if the other person is a dude or a dudette.

I'm not trying to be sexist or anything. I just like knowing a few details about people, so I have more to associate posts with.

If it makes people feel better, I'm okay with an option in the profile that hides one's sex from others, similar to the option to hide one's E-mail address.

It wouldn't matter. Really. I promise. Cues in posts are invisible to some people. Direct hints don't necessarily work. And there are a few, I'm sure, who hold it as a trump card.
