General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, 1934-2012 "Stormin'" Norman dead at 78 The Associated Press reports: A U.S. official says retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, who commanded the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's forces out of Kuwait in 1991, has died. He was 78. The official tells The Associated Press that Schwarzkopf died Thursday in Tampa, Fla. The official wasn't authorized to release the information publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. And so a chapter closes, and the world continues to watch as events play out, from father to son, and beyond. I once heard the General describe his greatest regret, at least from the Gulf War. It had to do with negoitating a cease-fire under political pressure from Poppy Bush's White House. He agreed to approval for certain helicopter flights as part of Saddam Hussein's security entourage, without realizing which helicopters he was clearing. These units took part in the massive slaughter of a half-million Iraqi Shi'a following the 1991 war. May he at least find peace from those ghosts. ____________________ Notes: Associated Press.
