    I do quite agree. The sad conclusion I think is closing in is that we are stuck on our own little lifeboat here.

    Try googling helium hyperfine structure.

    The energy spectrum of such transitions can be calculated without reference to any sort of superluminal effects

    No.

    You can have interactions between two photons if other particles (e.g. matter) are involved.
