    True

But you don't hear what culture people subscribe to only what race they are

    You hear both.
They do not, after all, "subscribe" to their assigned race.

My beloved spouse had a "red" ancestor(her grandfather was a communists).
    Does that count?

If someone is subscribing a race or assigning a race they are mistaken in doing either

Nonsense. That's absurd. I'm Irish; I don't speak Gaelic or wear a lot of green.
And tons of people have black ancestors. They often call themselves black. Tons of people have Italian ancestors. They call themselves Italian. Most people get this.

Native American is not a genetic category, it's a culture. You could come from Zambia and still be a Cherokee.

    No, it's not.

We should probably avoid redefining words. Words mean things, even if they are inconvenient.

"Marriage licenses don't cut it," said Krehbiel-Burton of the Cherokee Nation.

Further, to enroll as a member of the Cherokee Nation, an individual must have had a direct ancestor listed among the more than 101,000 people enrolled on the "Final Rolls of the Citizens and Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes in Indian Territory" between 1898-1914, now known as the Dawes Rolls. The Cherokee Nation is very strict about this, even keeping descendants of siblings of men and women on the rolls out of the tribe, as well as descendents of Cherokees who were living out of the area at the time the lists were drawn up in what was then Northeastern Oklahoma.

"If she does not have an ancestor listed on the Dawes Rolls, she cannot be considered Cherokee through this tribe," explained Lydia Neal, a processor with the registrar's office of the Cherokee Nation.

    Yeah, that's inconvenient.

    So?
While we await the enlightenment of all the mistaken people, we have a sociological reality to live in.
You did note the warning about the socially oblivious and often offensive term "native" American, right?

    Is it? First Nations then.

Either way, I'm not running for office, and I fully admit to social obliviousness.

    out of curiosity...
do you think that racist people comprehend the difference between covert racist activity & cultural appropriation for personal gain ?
(maybe her great grandmother told her secretly their was an illegitimate relative who was native American so she had blood line that is native American)
the whites would have acted in organised raping packs going around torturing and butchering men and babies and raping little girls.
    that was their normal mentality.
they went about killing & raping other humans for sport
    LoL !
that doesn't fit with racists opinions
how terribly inconvenient of you to raise the point.
is there any difference between asking for free money from someone else as opposed to being assigned a class of citizenship ?
given that likely millions of people have ancestry if they all claimed some of the money there would be no money left to stick a sign post in the ground.
such is the mechanism of american law
as Barack said culture 'it is organic'
    yet still governed by law
you cant expect an organic nature to become different to the shape of the borders it is contained within.
more so when there is machines with weed killer spraying the edges to kill off growth of varying types

Hence the Civil War, and so forth, right down to yesterday - yep. Institutionalized and sociologically ingrained errors of that magnitude tend to cause big problems.
Canadian term - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Nations - and only applies to named groups (doesn't work for Warren's situation, as she never claimed Tribal affiliation).
You don't admit to the social obliviousness of your critique of Warren's family history.
That is not what has been documented. It was a family history, nothing "secret" (the opposite) about it.
As did "the reds", on occasion.
The early frontier whites did not do that in general, of course - not much future in brigandry. They married, traded, dealt, traveled, etc. And the common practice of adopting captured or orphaned white (and black) children into Tribes still affects the gene pools involved.

I'm not critiquing her family history.

That's the only thing available to critique.
    Recall:
It wasn't a "story about a native American ancestor". She didn't call herself a member of any tribe.
Meanwhile: who is this "we", and how are they "better" than [/i]what[/l]?

One distant ancestor doesn't make you native American when the rest of your family is European. Is this the "one drop rule" again? Which is basically racist? I'm criticizing her judgement to identify as such, not a family story, which is acceptable as a legend. We, as Democrats, try our best to be the non-racist party. I like Warren's policies in general, but I don't think she has any leadership talent.

your sitting in the pot calling the kettle black while suggesting you should not get out of the pot or you will fall into the fire...

"one drop rule" etc.. is applied manipulation of something externally. it places the position of the comment to use the rule as a position of manipulating the other position. like a lever turning a bolt.

the external nature of the naming idea becomes racially biased by suggesting there is an ok format to allow the outside(observer) to name the inside...

i have been lucky enough to meet people from various cultures who on rare occasions have told me about non blood relatives who are considered of the same culture.
it is a fairly normal yet not very mainstream media thing.
it also doesn't sit well with those who seek to exploit division among people for their own profit and political power.
hence it gets sidelined by Mainstream media because it doesn't generate instant hate from a large enough group to swing viewer stats.
you occasionally see such things brief in cultural news items but they never are the main focus of the story.

    is a rights issue.
as opposed to criticizing her judgement
i criticize her judgment in not laying it all out on the table when it was first turned into a political weapon by the republican campaign leaders.
the poor judgement in allowing the republicans to piss in the pot and make everyone stink of urine.
thats how they think and thats how they act when it comes to basic mentality.
its about the least worst of the bunch and they will always sink the ship rather than give up leadership.
saboteur suicidal tactics who can always be bought for money.

... however, the con-man & scammer will always use that against you.
which makes it a weakness to the sheople who dont really pay attention to the real issues and want to vote for a Rich TV celebrity instead of a public servant.

swing voters dont really care about morality
they only care about their own greed and servicing their feelings.
policys dont really mean anything to them because the majority of policies advertised in electioneering are all lies.

swing voters would know this if they paid attention.
    but they dont.
some swing voters do, but they are a very very very small bunch so dont really count for media target advertising.

    Leadership Vs Talent...
getting lost in corporate speak ...
US follow the richest or biggest ego... = leadership
    Talent = porn

who has the most porn subscriber followers ?
    kardashians ?

how did porn feature in the run up to the election ?

did the dems sink their own ship ?
did the metoo movement change the government ?
did the womens rights march change the government ?

it is probably more sane to show the movements of metoo and womens march movements came only after the election.
thus it is an awakening not a toppling of governments.

when metoo & womens March and the centre right whos jobs have been outsourced and taxes have not been lowered get to the ballot box next.
the Republicans face a real issue.
