The other day I heard a young girl raise this question:

"If you set out to fail, but do not succeed, what have you done?"

She must have heard adults asking this question, and was just bringing it up to be difficult. But seriously, what is the answer?

It depends upon what you tried to fail at. As an example if you tried to fail at swimming and you found that you could swim, you have suceeded at learning how to swim.

Not succeeding in ANY planned course of action still constitutes a failure, even if your attempted goal was failure, IMO.

Not succeeding in failure is an interesting type of outcome, yet it still meets the 'failure' test, in simple terms.

Perhaps that is the origin of the term, "Succeed in spite of yourself."
