"In biology, evolution is the change from generation to generation in how common various inherited characteristics are within a population. These characteristics are encoded on genes. Competing variants of genes, known as alleles, cause different characteristics to become more common in different organisms, resulting in variation between organisms with different alleles. As these differences in and between populations accumulate, new species can evolve from prior ones. All known species are descended from a single ancestor through this process of gradual divergence." ~ Wikipedia

Of course it's true. The exact mechanisms are always up for discussion, but does evolution happen? It's blatantly obvious that it does.

I would have thought that the thing we know most about evolution, is that Natural selection happens! That is a proven fact without the need for observation. Anything self-replicating, of which there is a variety of characteristics, will evolve through natural selection pressures if the presures are applicable to the characteristics.

Sure. But isn't it equally true that god could have directed every single step in every single cell in every single living thing? I.e., evolution/change/adaptation occurs, but it's not "natural", it's directed?

What I find interesting is that those who believe in evolution use that same "belief" to show/prove that a "belief" in god is wrong. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I know of no one who has actually seen the step-by-step processes in evolution, yet they "believe" that it happens because of other, outside forces which they've observed after-the-fact.

Such a thread can only have been started by an American.

U.S.A.: the only industrialized, western nation still debating the validity of evolution theory and still teaching its children fairy tales about creationism in school.

If this doesn’t explain George W. then what does?
Hey, have you Americans decided if the Earth is flat or round yet?
Maybe teaching the flat earth theory can be part of your nation’s contributions to civilization and humankind.

So God caused (and is causing) evolution?

Is that any more difficult to believe than some "creature" leaped up out of the primodial soup and yelled, "Here I am, world ....LIFE!" ...and then proceeded to slowly become all of the creatures on Earth???

I have this vision of a dirty, filthy, little creature crawling up onto the land, then sprouting wings and flying across the African plains .....shitting out little dabs of shit that suddenly become humans as the shit hits the ground! ...LOL!

Wow, IAC couldnt have put it any better. Actually I prefer the "goo morphed into you" LOL

If thats what you really think the theory of evolution is, then I seriously suggest you read a book.

I read books!! I'm reading a good one right now ...."Revenge of the Swamp Monster from the Black Lagoon". Good book ...you should read it.

Hey, Nick, why do you think it's called the "THEORY" of evolution?

The theory of evolution is simple; tiny little creatures of the past deciding to become something different, so they huff n' puff and magically turn into whatever they wanted to be. See? The little fishy-lookin' thing comes out onto the land, looks around and thinks, "Hey, this place is a lot better than that damned polluted ocean!" So he huffs n' puffs and becomes an air-breathing creature who walks around on the land. Pretty neat, huh?

    Its obvious you havent.

That "description" of evolution of yours is about as wacky as they come.

    No, they don't decide anything.

Are you saying that my "theory" is wrong??? How fuckin' dare you!

By the way, just for my own education, how do you know those little creatures didn't decide anything? Are you claiming that they were stupid?

yes things evolve (life cycle), even rocks. elolution "the industry" seems to be far fetched.

    Jesus here we go.

There is no way to prove or disprove this statement. If you are ok with living your life with such an assumption, then farbeit from us to criticize you. There is also no evidence of this that follows from the initial assumption that will disprove evolution. That is, you cannot predict something that isn't consistent with observation. All observations are consistent with the theory of evolution, thus your theory is no different. You have made a statement that cannot be proven or disproven, and there is no evidence which may support your claim. Your theory is trivially the same as evolution, accept you have to have some thing called "God" pulling all of the strings.(1)

Note also that the theory you describe is inconsistent with the idea of free will, and salvation by faith alone. Two things that most Christians in America hold sacred.

The problem is when you try to attach the word "science" to it---there are tons of experiments which lead us to the conclusion that evolution is the correct answer, which can explain everything without God reaching in and messing things up. You will say "well my theory has all the same features of evolution, accept God is doing all the work". Now replace "God" with "magic", and you will have my response.

You will say "there is no way to prove evolution" and in the strictest interpretation of this statement, you are correct. But if this is true, then there is no way to prove or disprove your initial statement, which I showed was trivially the same as the theory of evolutions. I will also say that "there is also no proof of God", and because your theory relies on God to do all the work, you are now relying on an unproven diety to make every single choice in the history of the universe. Using your (implied) definition of God, clearly a theory without God is inherintly (by definition, if you like) better than one which relies on God to decide the outcome of every single quantum mechanical observation.

    Let the games begin.
    ============================== Added in edit
    (1) you may say "well evolution doesn't predict this single piece of data. In fact, this single observation contradicts evolution." I will say "Then you have constructed a theory which requires a God who makes every choice in the history of the universe in order to explain one single shred of evidence not currently explained by evolution." Congratualtions. Your theory must be redesigned every single time such a piece of data comes along, and still can never be proven wrong. It has no predictive power, because God can do anything. So it can't be disproven and is not predictive.

This is blatantly wrong---evolution is observed in the lab.

and? you post links to what we call DNA, studies of what we call chromosomes. so lay the debate to rest and explain how an ape morphs into a human.

    shouldnt be a problem right?

Your question doesn't make sense, humans are a kind of ape.
