At a free edge in a member which is thin compared to its other dimensions, one might measure the change in thickness, or the through thickness strain by gage to determine the stress parallel to the edge such as in the bottom of the groove at the edge of a plate. Would someone please readily illustrate/explain the bold part by means of a picture? Many thanks
