Oftentimes, Doctors will proscribe pills for patients that are suffering from medical conditions. What if there were a capsule that was about the size of a grain of rice that is implanted under the skin, perhaps in the arm. The capsule would have a medication that would only be released if a certain medical condition occurred. The capsule and the medication could lie dormant in the arm for decades before needed to be used, if at all. The timely release of the medication would greatly proceed an ambulance, doctors and hospital and as such could save a person's life. In fact, capsules could be made holding dozens or hundreds of medication is separate containers to address hundreds of different life-threatening situations. These are in essence dormant pills. I remember reading about a technology called ICD's or implantable cardioverter defibrillators. Wikipedia defines ICD's as 'a device implantable inside the body, able to perform cardioversion, defibrillation, and (in modern versions) pacing of the heart. The device is therefore capable of correcting most life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias.' This got me to thinking about other conditions and what kinds of implantable early response devises might be built. What conditions and medications would be useful for a model dormant pill? What would the reader suggest? DE

    Seriously though:
1] there are precious few conditions that can strike so fast that a paramedic is too slow. I could see it for heart attacks, but what else?

Why is it best to wait? Because

2] you really REALLY don't want medications being delivered without a qualified person in charge of diagnosis and making the judgment call. How many ways can a device the size of a grain of rice incorrectly decide that what you need right now is an armful of Nitroglycerine?

This will take more lives than it saves.
