Haha you know whats funny about ATI cards? Well my brother actually just modified his. He Got I believe the 9800 pro... its like $300 bucks... one of the best...

But you know whats really funny? The card in his computer isnt an 9800pro anymore... Nope its now a ATI 9800XT (about $100-$150 more than the pro).

And how did he make this magical transformation? Well, modififying a new copper heat sink and fan to replace the old dinky aluminum piece of crap was a bit of a bitch, but everything else was easy. Why?

Because the ATI 9800 pro and ATI 9800XT are EXACTLY the same cards with DIFFERENT Bios. All he did was update the bios with the XT version, made a new heatsink to handle the heat... and Voila. Works like a dream

So dont buy an XT... buy a pro, search the web, and find the instructions to modify your new video card

(P.S. I think this voids the warranty, so do it at your own risk lol)

Yeah. I was just reading about that 9800 pro to xt thing. Too bad I only got a 9600 All-in-Wonder.

Me have a Herc 9800 SE AIW cost me £110 (? $180-90) six months ago now happily softmodded to 9800 pro. Then I went and overclocked it.

Do you have Doom 3? Have you tried the mod? I notice a slight improvement. Very slight. But, I'm only using a 9600. The best results come with the x800. But, the 9800 might see significant improvement in frame rate as well.

In the thread, they mention white aliasing artifacts that become present in a few spots during the game. I have yet to see any.

The best improvement is also seen on the high perfomance setting. Medium and low not so much. Unfortunately, even with the slight improvement (say 3-5 frames per second) it's still too jerky to play for me. So, I have to set it to low. Bummer.

    Sweet graphics in this game.

And spurious, it does indeed seem very surreal and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The deeper you go the more hell-like it becomes. It has a story line for a change (ok, not much of a story line. Mostly just "Get movin' marine. Alpha team is in trouble and needs your help!"

) But, much more than the first two. And the beginning of the game until Hell is released is all about story.

Haven't seen a cheat to play the original Doom though. Where did you hear about that, Wes? I checked GameFAQs.com and they didn't mention it. That would be sweet to play the original doom with this engine.

Edit: Oh the Hercules Radeon. That's the one with the demon head on the fan isn't it? Or perhaps the SE didn't have a fan? Does it look something like this?

Edit again: Anyone know if I could make my 9600 a 9600 pro?

I've not come across anything that tests the card to it's limits yet but maybe thats about to change.

    Possibly. Suck it and see.

It means using a different set of drivers but mine works just fine.

    Good luck.

Hmm. Maybe I messed up and typed in the wrong name?

Heh. Just checked and that's exactly what I did. *slaps self on head* The bastards even design the sight to look just like the .org site. BASTARDS!!!!

Thanks, Avatar. You made my day. That bummed me out when I thought they went commercial.

    Spurious,

If all you had was your laptop, then Doom 3 is out for you anyway. Requires much resources. It would likely set your laptop on fire if it were still working.

probably the best example of the physics engine on doom3 that happened TO ME was this one time i was looking at those monster buffed marines with the whip-arm, and there was 2 big window panes between me and him (one window was broken).

I was on the other side of him (he seemed to be stuck in the room) on the other side of the unbroken window. i laffed cuz i thot he was stuck, then suddenly he flung his WHIP AROUND THE BROKEN WINDOW AREA AND IT SWUNG AROUND COMPLETELY AND HIT ME!!

i was like holy sh!t !! then i busted 2 BUCKSHOTS IN HIS CHEST.

    good times.

My favorite moment was when of those demons appeared that summons the other demons and like blasts a wall of fire with both hands. Yeah, I ran back through a door. As I selected my weapon, he opened the door and raised his hands charging up, just then I let the trigger go on my BFG 9000 and KABLAM! Shot him right back into the other room and the doors abruptly closed.... went look for body parts but he was vaporized. I was laughing histerically lol... first time I used the BFG.

A pity about the damage indicator, though. Why do I get a slash across my face when a zombie attack me from behind?

Also the weapons seem underpowered as compared to the original.

I agree. Although two buckshots at close range seem to do the trick for most monsters. At the moment I employ the "rush 'em and blast 'em" tactic to great effect

    .

Does anybody know if you can toggle 'always run' in single player? My little finger complains from all the running.

I have two more complaints about the game:
    1) No co-op multiplayer. That was the attraction of the originals for me.
    2) Claustrophobic. I appreciate the atmosphere, but really. Does anybody else have fond memories of strafing around great open stretches trying to avoid long range missile attacks and flying skulls? Ah, the nostalgia...
