"OOHH GEI BU GEI QIAN. MA SHANG GEI 400, OOHH" shouts a Chinese dog peddler, as he lifts a dog into the air by a rope around its neck, then slams the dog down to the ground in front of a woman pleading for the dog to be spared. -- LINK TO ARTICLE: http://www.chinasmack.com/2014/stor...dogs-to-get-higher-price-from-dog-lovers.html Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Many people have condoned the consumption of dog meat as a cultural phenomenon specific to Chinese, comparable to the consumption of beef and pork in the USA. This is an argument I can accept, but as a dog lover, I am devastated by the sadistic torture of these animals depicted in this article. Dog owners and dog lovers in China are seen as rich people who don't know the hardships of the everyday Chinese citizen; the ability to afford to care for dogs in China and love these pets is seen as a luxury. For that reason, the events in the article are completely excusable in the eyes of many Chinese. "They are only trying to make a living, by torturing dogs for cash." Some comments by the Chinese: What does everyone think of this phenomenon? Reminder: animal torture is legal in China and they are officially one of the worst human and animal rights abusers in the world. Why would that be? Is this behavior part of the cultural identity of the Chinese, or simply the result of their economic hardship? Why isn't this behavior seen more often in even poorer countries?
