Learning how to play the 'Blast Beat' or the 300bpm snare/double kick/ride beat caused people to identify me as "Nazi" before I even awakened to this. I owe death metal/Black metal/ Thrash metal and extreme music in general for much of my current enlightenment. - heavy metal fanatic

My comments:

I'm not sure I agree, but it's clear that 'extreme heavy metal' leads away from our current society, which is liberal in nature. It's heavy metal - it can't embrace society. That's just how it is.

I'd say it leads people away from buying it because it ,IMHO, isn't goood music, it is crap.

Well, Black Metal shows racist tendencies in some cases, otherwise... why should it be fascistic in general?

BTW, there are also fascists who make pop music.

Hoooo - WEEE...!!!

Could you feel your IQ dropping just browsing through that "Aryan Superman" forum...?

I thought "Heavy Metal" was "rebel music"...
The sort of thing guaranteed to piss off parents who considered it too loud, obnoxious, crude, lewd, or whatnot...

I fail to see how it could be an "enlightening" phenomenon - at least the stuff they claim is "opening their eyes" to the "truth" of white supremacist theories, because... well... the theories are 101% bullshit...!

Its is Rap music that has caused the destruction of society, with all this Bling culture.

Heavy Meal is actually quite intelligent and peacefull music.

Just a brief foray into that forum evokes the reaction you might have after stepping into a Great Dane sized pile of dog shit.

Blaming music for anti social stupidity is one of the oldest dodges in the book. Impressionable nitwits who fall for neo Naziism will find it sooner or later no matter what they listen to.

I know at least 5 people who listen to heavy metal and the kind of music that makes your ears bleed, and none of them have any fascist tendencies.

In an age when you have christian rock music, why not just admit that music is a great way of expresing yourself, and is usually twisted into all shapes and forms.

Funny thing, I always thought of Heavy Metal as Judas Priest or Iron Maiden. Not really "Nazi". I think the author means more along the lines of Black Metal or particularly NSBM.

Which, hate to break it to y'all folks - but the vast majority of NSBM sucks. Over-use the keyboards, throw in some half-assed riffing and double-basses, scream about Hitler and death and then release it on a poorly produced, cheap-ass mCD.

It succeeds because you know some asshole wearing the imitation third-reich paratrooper boots and imitation Waffen SS belt that he bought off Resistance Records will buy it simply for being NSBM.

Now, I'm not an authoritarian, but it's not the fascist content I object to. It's how bloody embarassing these people are to the metal ideal as a whole. Drunk, stupid Cannibal Corpse fans end up in the same category as sober, uncreative Nazi fetishists.

Not that there aren't good NSBM affiliated bands, but note the affiliated. There's a reason bands like Capricornus, Burzum, Nokturnal Mortem and Graveland aren't "trve" NSBM. They have talent and don't have to ride the neo-Nazi gravy train.

Dreamwalker:
I've always felt black metal to be rather anti-authoritarian in nature. Its values have always to me seemed focused on the individual, on the personal striving for transcendence, excellence, power and freedom.

I think it is seen as fascistic because we reject most "democratic" values like imposed equality, community and the rule of the majority.
That, and black metal's emphasis on hatred, extermination and total domination. It is not precisely the sort of thing that goes over at a Kerry convention.
Black metal is aristocratic noise.

p.s. I'm not a nazi freak. That music is a part of my historic collection. The same place where "ukrainian village music - historic recordings 1928 - 1933" is.

I have even wax cylinder recordings from 19th century. RIAA can bite its tail off

Anyways, I don't mean that there aren't intelligent national socialists. There are, but they are few and far between.

You know what we ought do just to get rid of the unintelligent ones? We ought to make Nazi fetishism hip! Just watching teenyboppers parade around in flight jackets and hot pants held up by SS belts would be sufficiant punishment.

Killjoy:
I don't "get" all the labels either. I have a friend who lumps every form of metal into the category "death metal".
So Necrophagia is death metal, and Cradle of Filth is death metal, and Slayer is death metal and so on. I have the weird semi-autistic tendancy to categorize things....so Necrophagia is grind-death metal, Cradle of Filth is pop black metal, Slayer is speed death metal, etc.

"Heavy metal" was first used by William Burroughs, some credit it to Steppenwolf - but Burroughs used it first, in whatever context, and I'd say that his aesthetic vision isn't too far from what heavy metal is.

I think Sabbath established the genre, bands like Steppenwolf and Led Zepplin having influence. Of course the sound has changed so drastically...

Not any more than here, with its 40:1 logical fallacies and ad hominem to debate-worthy information ratio - and that's after tossing out the blatant one-liners and jokes.

Shoot them. In the face. Let the 400 or so smart ones (out of I'd say about 800 smart people in politics in the USA right now) do their thing on their own - after all, that is freedom LOL
