Microsoft just announced that game developers can now create cross-platform multiplayer modes that work with other consoles and operating systems, which means that the future games could feature a multiplayer mode that works with both Xbox and Playstation gamers.
Microsoft is now clearly the underdog in console race, and by opening up cross-platform multiplayer, they could convince late adopters to buy an Xbox One even though their friends have a PlayStation 4. It’s also a way to make sure that there are enough players for less popular games.
With Microsoft mentioning cross-platform multiplayer between the Xbox One and Windows, cross-platform multiplayer between PlayStation 4 and PC players could be also possible.
The first game that is going to support cross-platform multiplayer is Rocket League.
