We have another thread somewhere that has similar discussions. My two cents is that to produce EMP in massive scale will require a nuke. But to produce a focused RF beam can be done from a van. A 5000 Watt RF disturbance will require a simple car battery. Do not try this at home, you will have police at your door step in no time.

But EMP blast is another matter. Anything underground with steel doors will survive the EMP blast. But I am not too sure about an airplane. The primary wave front may get diminshed but subsequent ones will create an induction effect which will knock out all ICs. Just static electricity will knockout your computer memory chips. If a spark jumps at a million volt, goodbye the chip.

The scary thing is about EMP weapons is their simplicity and cheapness of build. A car battery and a microwave oven magnetron are the main parts needed to make a portable EMP beam device.

What presents the most threat are EMP bombs. It is possible to make a compact non-nuke EMP bomb that has a good range of effectiveness.
Stuff a aluminum pipe with explosive. Wind a wire coil around it, which connects to a antenna at one end, and a battery and capacitor at the other.
As the explosive is detonated from one end, and the wave of explosion races along the tube, taking nanoseconds. At the same time electrical pulse is fed through the coil. The shockwave from the explosion crushes the aluminium tube outward against the coil, compressing it and amplifying the pulse, which is then emitted from the antenna before the whole thing is destroyed.
Some bombs like this will crash all un-protected computers within a range of 500 metres (1/3 mile) and permanently destroy most chips within 100 metres! All this from a explosion about that would blow up a car.
The wavelength is such that the radiation will pass through the narrowest of gaps. Any cable to a computer instantly acts like a antenna helping to cook any electronics.
Of course effectiveness depends on the initial input energy into the coil.

Minimal loss of life, but in terms of power its not far from a low-yield nuclear warhead in terms of EMP pulse. But there you have it, a terrorist weapon for $50 - ignoring the cost of the black market explosive.

    Scary stuff

    Has anyone read "Quicksilver"?

In this book, "Quicksilver" terrorists take control of the Pentagon through various means, but their key to taking the Pentagon is to use an EMP bomb made from basicly a coffeemaker shell, a car battery, copper coil, and semtex explosive core. The bomb is launched to maybe a thousand feet in the air, the battery sends a current through the coil which creates a magnetic field. The explosive core detonates moving the magnetic field of 10,000 plus volts through the air, in a crude beam. This knocks out all communications and electronics in the area.

If I were a terrorist and really wanted to wreak havoc, I wouldn't hit the Pentagon, the White House, or anything minor like that with an E-Bomb. If I were a terrorist I'd aim for the New York Stock Exchange at mid-trading time. The bomb would frag all the computers, and crash the stock market. Vola! Instant Second Great Depression for the US and the rest of the first-world.

    Pretty nifty, eh?

I doubt a chemical explosion will carry electromagnetic radiation with it. And 5000 watts of power will not induce multimillion volts to fry a circuit at a distance. A mere 10KV will not knock out anything unless physically touched. I think our national grid of electrical power runs at 132KV. Schools with computers are next to those powerlines.

I guess NYSE is attacked everyday by foreign hackers to knock out the system. There are other very simple way to knock out the system like the classic cutting the cable to the building. There are other ways but that requires brain power which they lack (otherwise they would be rich and decadent like us).

Very interesting. However, I do not believe that I will ask how. I might get an answer.

For now I am content that a nuclear blast will supply such and leave it at that. But the prospect that you bring up, that such could be the result, if the terrorists used brain power leaves the door open. Thankfully I live in a small city and as such do not have much to worry about on that scale. (bigger fish to fry elsewhere)

As internet denizens, we may be among the first to know: because there's a lot of anti 1st Amendment and global communications pirates who benefit from the obliteration of shared-thoughtful world resources. The internet satellites can be compromised via EMP, without disabling any other part of a given satellite's communications payload. So goes the dubiously orbiting rumor-mill...

Whereas, it is publicly released, qualified White House proclamation, that the internet can be completely withheld from public access, at any time in the present or future, without disturbing any other prevailing satellite function. This can be confirmed, via Google search, etceteras. Enter 'wwwInternet cut-off switch' (if your computer doesn't snag this, enter alternatively viable key words).

Please say here (in this thread) what your results may be... 'They' are hi-tech empowered to isolate and impact individual computers: 'they', for example, are openly stating that 'advanced' super computers (that comparatively make 'ours' resemble Toys R Us)', scan 'billions' of ongoing telephone conversations, since 9/11; in the continental United States, at the rate of 60,000 calls per second...

(Please do not clutter this venerable thread with any sock-puppet rhetoric about 'there is no "they" '...)

    You do the math.

'Terrorists' have certainly captured the hearts and minds of a lot of productive people who have the constructively revolutionary duty to preserve and maintain themselves, in order to make maximal contributions for the benefit of the majority of 'We the people', for the longest period of time.

No question of the undeniable power of the otherwise impotent terrorist elements - their most powerful motivation being that of self-destruction and taking as many innocent people with them, as possible, in one final bursting flash of fire. Mighty cheap shots, at very expensive prices.

Moreover, there's a lot of 'missing, unaccounted-for fissionable material' - pounds of it. It takes about one thin dime's worth of weight of 'weapons grade' Plutonium, to raze major portions of your city and blast your main-framed HushPuppies klean off, from every bit of several miles away...

This thread has spoken of terrorists using their brains... Any disciplined student may go to most any library (in any language) and learn how to make a fissile weapon, and, perhaps surround it with a lot of silicone dioxide (salt), to fashion a particularly 'dirty bomb'.

Once on a meteorologically determined 'prevailing' wind, even a small dirty bomb could easily capitalize on a lot of 'mileage', down-wind: especially if and when it rose up to meet and join the 'jet-stream'. Of course it would be very near that airy confluence (the jet-stream) if and when it was detonated on any aircraft at or near and above 30 grand... The standard elevation for modern, pressurized passenger aircraft is (more and less) six to eight miles high...

    Post Script:
Yes. Suicide bombers are mad, name-calling, language slaying, Godless infidels, but: many of them are remarkably well-educated, and, like an abundance of incumbently murderous Nazis: they are not the least bit stupid.
Furthermore, droves of them are multi-lingual, and have absorbed much - if not all - of their post-graduate level education, in the past several decades, in the United States.

    :fright:

I think you are confusing several things in the above thread. There are no "Internet satellites." Very little Internet traffic is carried via satellite; it is mostly via terrestrial land lines. There is also nothing like a real "kill switch" - what you picture as a big red switch, being stroked thoughtfully by a megalomaniac, would actually be millions of phone calls to ISP's by the government, each saying "please please PLEASE shut your service down!" From the Wiki article:

"This makes implementation of a kill switch that much more difficult: Each company would have to voluntarily comply. There is no law that gives the United States authority over an ISP unless court ordered. . . . There are thousands of ISPs and since they don’t have to register, there is no known way of contacting them in time and forcing the ISP to comply. The regulations that the United States uses to regulate the information and data industry may have inadvertently made a true “Internet kill switch” impossible. The deregulation allowed for a building of a patch-work system (ISPs, Internet Backbone) that is extremely complex and not fully known."

(Refer post #27 as it relates to the following document...)

President Obama will be handed the power to shut down the Internet for at least four months without Congressional oversight if the Senate votes for the infamous Internet ‘kill switch’ bill, which was approved by a key Senate committee yesterday and now moves to the floor.

The Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act, which is being pushed hard by Senator Joe Lieberman, would hand absolute power to the federal government to close down networks, and block incoming Internet traffic from certain countries under a declared national emergency.

Despite the Center for Democracy and Technology and 23 other privacy and technology organizations sending letters to Lieberman and other backers of the bill expressing concerns that the legislation could be used to stifle free speech, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee passed in the bill in advance of a vote on the Senate floor.

In response to widespread criticism of the bill, language was added that would force the government to seek congressional approval to extend emergency measures beyond 120 days. Still, this would hand Obama the authority to shut down the Internet on a whim without Congressional oversight or approval for a period of no less than four months.

The Senators pushing the bill rejected the claim that the bill was a ‘kill switch’ for the Internet, not by denying that Obama would be given the authority to shut down the Internet as part of this legislation, but by arguing that he already had the power to do so.
They argued “That the President already had authority under the Communications Act to “cause the closing of any facility or station for wire communication” when there is a “state or threat of war”, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

Obama Can Shut Down Internet For 4 Months Under New Emergency Powers 150410banner1

Fears that the legislation is aimed at bringing the Internet under the regulatory power of the U.S. government in an offensive against free speech were heightened further on Sunday, when Lieberman revealed that the plan was to mimic China’s policies of policing the web with censorship and coercion.

“Right now China, the government, can disconnect parts of its Internet in case of war and we need to have that here too,” Lieberman told CNN’s Candy Crowley.

While media and public attention is overwhelmingly focused on the BP oil spill, the establishment is quietly preparing the framework that will allow Obama, or indeed any President who follows him, to bring down a technological iron curtain that will give the government a foot in the door on seizing complete control over the Internet.

As we have illustrated, fears surrounding cybersecurity have been hyped to mask the real agenda behind the bill, which is to strangle the runaway growth of alternative and independent media outlets which are exposing government atrocities, cover-ups and cronyism like never before.

Indeed, China uses similar rhetoric about the need to maintain “security” and combating cyber warfare by regulating the web, when in reality their entire program is focused around silencing anyone who criticizes the state.

The real agenda behind government control of the Internet has always been to strangle and suffocate independent media outlets who are now competing with and even displacing establishment press organs, with websites like the Drudge Report now attracting more traffic than many large newspapers combined. As part of this war against independent media, the FTC recently proposing a “Drudge Tax” that would force independent media organizations to pay fees that would be used to fund mainstream newspapers.
