    Although admittedly this is dumbing down the conversation to a matter of science, I believe our ability to see the moon as separated by a gulf of darkness, is associated with our ability to judge distance. However, you will note that our appreciation of the distance of the moon is radically offline with its actual distance. This is why some ancient peoples could think it maybe 15 or so miles in the sky and a disk.
