I think the amount of attention he gets is the point. With all the lamentations you hear, you'd think people would be less likely to encourage him.

There is nothing wrong with being ignorant.
There is everything wrong with chosing to be ignorant.
Arrogance about your selective ignorance is simply unforgivable.

This forum is filled with pseudo-intellectuals who sit around like old men wishing for the good old days, in-between exchanging lascivious gossip and getting off on righteous voyeurism about the bad bad boys in the here and now.

Exactly. But when I was young it wasn't like that...

We all agree that the burden placed upon IAC's broad shoulders is vast and onerous. By graciously engaging "everyone," IAC is helping them in the long run by maintaining their interest in a given topic and perhaps helping them come to an understanding at some point.

International treasures such as IAC are rare indeed. We should count our blessings and blissfully avail ourselves of this most precious human resource.

FYI, I disagree entirely with IAC's theories; however, that should not automatically make him liable for ostracism. I dislike any clannish promotion of groupthink.

    Just clarifying my position.

But such a method of social maintenance has been successfully implemented by egalitarian and band level societies for thousands of years. Indeed the very notion of "ostracism" derives from the word "ostraca," the broken bits of pottery that were used in ancient Athens to "vote" a citizen into exile.

Yes and its been variously known as ex-communication, exile, solitary confinement, imprisonment, discrimination, racism etc in its various forms.

Do you know of any positive outcomes from any of these methods of social maintenance?

I would suggest some of the works of Kipling Williams for an insight on the effects of social exclusion and ostracism

Big difference between simply rejecting the community of someone, and actively working towards their harm like the inquisition.

IMO and also my experience, it is damaging to stifle any kind of debate, because:

    1. it gives rise to conspiracy theories
    2. it creates artificial victims
    3. it conceals these points of view or gives them legitimacy among some people who are only insidiously exposed to them in a covert manner.

    Debate is better than suppression.

It was like that when I joined.

Anyway, what was that about Porfiry not being quite in charge any more?

Porfiry sold this site for mega bucks. He's off on some island sipping rum.
