Can "fundamental" particles ever be observed?

Today I was thinking, even if we could make a consistent theory about what is really fundamental, could we ever actually observe it?
Could we detect an interaction between fundamental particles, if all that could possibly be exchanged in the interaction is another fundamental particle?
There is no device that we could use to probe something that is truly fundamental, because it would be the smallest entity in existance. Furthermore, because of this, it seems we could never "isolate" two particles to begin with.

    Any ideas?
