In the UK it is becomning increasingly difficult for universities to pick the best students for their courses and currently there is a points system in place which adds up A level results as follows

    Grade A-120 points
    B-100
    C-80
    D-70

You can work out the rest, wouldn't it be better if pupils had more clearly defined grades and could get anything between 0 and 120 for an exam and add them up to get a wide range of grades for universities to look at?

They already can - certainly Cambridge and probably Oxford as well look at the total score you get on your A-Level, which is out of 600. In addition Cambridge ask for individual unit scores as well, there are interviews and finally an entrance paper.
As to the points system, it's not that widely used as far as I'm aware - most offers are something like "ABC, A in maths/physics". There are also parts of the points system - mostly Key Skills - that although they are technically a part of the system, are ignored by most universities.
