Bras and gravity?

This question has been on my mind for a few days. As a girl you always hear that wearing a bra most of the time would prevent sagginess because shoulders bear the weight of breasts and this way gravity can't effect them that much . However, some new studies say that bras actually cause sagginess because they make the ligaments that hold breasts weak and that gravity affects breasts anyways, wearing a bra or not.

So, if you look at it from the physics point of view is the sentence in italic true? and if not does it mean that wearing a bra that hold the weight of your breast can completely neutralize the effect of gravity on you? to me as far as I remember physics these two forces neutralize eachother so the object in this case breasts should remain intact!

PS: sorry if it does not sound like a very scientific question or is not appropriate maybe.

The purveyors of those new studies need to open some old National Geographic magazines. NatG used to send writers and photographers to report on primitive people who lived in the tropics without any modern accoutrements such as brasiers. The women went topless. Those pictures were not deemed to be sexually provocative for one simple reason: Breasts that hang down to the waist, or even to the knees, are not sexy.

No, bras do nothing but hitch them up temporarily. Sagginess, or a lack thereof, is determined by genetics. Asian and some white women tend to have firmer ones, while Hispanic and black women tend to have less firm breasts.

Your logic makes sense - use the muscles or lose the muscle - use 'em or lose 'em.
You could try a single person exeriment.

1.Carefully measue the position of both nipples - theses are easily identified zero points on your mobile frame.
    2. locate a point from which you can measure the relative position of the nipples.
    3. make a bra that can support one breast only.
    4. over a period of time -probably 2-3 years. Make as many careful measurements of the nipple positin as possible.

You might want to consult some anatomical specialists regarding know breast muscle parameters, functions, history, patholgy etc to determine easier or more direct methodoly.

When writing this post it dawned on me that the measrement system described abovo if the supported breast has a greater sag than the supported breast. It is your science project and that very deeply concerns a large number of the population. Probably most women would really like to know. Some men, those with 'breast size issues' , might be curious, at most. Bra manufascturers shpould be watched in order to maintain result integrity matters.

To answer the question in italics: Bra does not neutralize gravity in the interior of breasts, it directly interacts with only the surface of breasts, so the breast tissue somehow must support the interior weight.

The question is does the lack of muscle use (from bra use) result in the early deterioration of otherwise more effect an otherwise use of muscles supporting the breast.:shrug:

Is it because Asian and white women usually have smaller breasts than black or Latin women? More tissue would be heavier and stretch the skin faster maybe?

Its not like those unused muscles will become petrified, and as long the bra hold the breast why should it even begin to sag.

If she stops wearing it and starts using the muscles, the muscles will just grow stronger.

I don't understand why the breast will sag if the bra is holding it up.

I think they sag because skin loses elasticity as we grow older. You probably don't see very many 20 year old women with breasts all the way down to their knees. But by 60 or so even active women who are in good shape breasts are no where near as high up on the chest as a 20 year old. I think age causes sagging not the use or disuse of bras.
    of course everybody is different.

no its true, true in men too just not as apparent.

I was at a dinner table with my dad and my uncle (both 60+), they were complaining about getting old and talking about how your skin just stretches and sags.

I am sure wearing a bra should somewhat affect the sagging though, especially for women with large ones, it should definitely make a difference, skin stretches if pulled for long periods of time, just look at skinny people who used to be fat, they have saggy skin, even at early ages.

It's maybe not so much "stretching" as the fact that age causes skin to lose its elasticity.
So the "bounce" (oops that word in this context causes prurient images

should'a said "tautness") is gone and hence the sagging.

we of course do not focus on the sexual explicit images and explore only the scientific context

Exactly Draq: and now it's time to state the obvious.

    What causes sagging of breasts?
Sagging or drooping of breasts is a natural, inevitable process that happens to all women at some point - except those with fairly small breasts.

The most notable sagging happens with the process called breast involution (see below), but breasts can start drooping a little at any age, because they do NOT have muscles in them. They have ligaments and connective tissue.

When the gravity pulls the breasts down, those ligaments and the skin can stretch, and so the breast then droops. This depends on the elasticity of your skin and of your ligaments, as determined by your genes and diet, and also on normal aging processes. Obviously large breasts will sag easier since the gravity is pulling them down more.

Breast involution is a process where the milk-making system inside the breast shrinks because it's not needed anymore. This happens either after weaning, or right after pregnancy if you don't breastfeed at all, or during menopause. When the tissues inside breast shrink, and the skin surrounding it doesn't, the breast can look 'empty' and saggy. Over time, some fat gets deposited back to the breast so it will look somewhat fuller but sagging usually remains.

Another common cause for sagging is when a woman loses weight. When you lose weight, some of that fat disappears from your breasts. Typically the skin and the ligaments inside the breasts do not retract accordingly, resulting in an 'empty' looking breast that then sags. (You could try prevent this by eating foods that provide extra good nutrition for your skin.)

Worries about sagging breasts is one of the most popular questions sent to this website. (See Breast development and teenagers worries and Breast gallery page). So if you feel your breasts droop, you are most certainly not alone!

Note: A scientific study that studied the effects of breastfeeding upon sagging, found that breastfeeding per se did not have an affect upon the sagging. According to the study, the following were risk factors for an increased degree of breast sagging: body mass index (BMI), the number of pregnancies, a larger pre-pregnancy bra size, smoking history, and age.
(The Effect of Breastfeeding Upon Breast Aesthetics by Brian Rinker)

My earlier post on this subject should be ignored or substitue skin and tendons for muswcles in the breast. Breasts are muscle less, but still very interesting - in bikini apparell what is exposed is most interesting, what is hidden is crucial.

Breast size is only one factor in sagging, and not really the most important. It also depends on the tissue quality, how responsive your body is to collagen and how much it produces, etc.

On the other hand, I had a little slack in my teens. Building my chest muscles has helped a little, but the fact that my skin sack that holds the tissue is not as small as a friend who also has D cups makes them less firm than hers, and hers look fake they're so pert.

My mom's got way more sag than her friend who's got a pretty good body for being 63. Mom just turned 59, so a lot of this can be chalked up to all kinds of things. Gaining and losing weight effects it, too.

No, small breasted women sag, too. And sometimes women with large breasts don't really sag that much.

Breast involution in this case has NOTHING to do with fat deposits. Swollen milk ducts that shrink back aren't going to cause a lot of sagging long term. It's the tissue tightening. Nothing to do with fat deposits. It usually requires several pregnancies/years of breastfeeding to really cause anything additionally noticable, regardless of the puritans who hate breastfeeding tell you.

I would need to observe and experiment with your breasts in order to answer this scientifically...

you guys got it all wrong. Breasts do not have any muscle tissue in them! ligaments in the breasts are the parts responsible to hold them not the pectoral muscles above them.

I'll be the judge about that! Now come a little closer to your monitor and remove that bra you are wearing and let me see!
