Illusionist David Blaine has begun his latest stunt - spending seven days underwater in his "human aquarium" challenge in New York.

A mask and air line will keep Blaine alive, while food will be provided through a tube.

"My system is completely empty and I did that so there's no waste. That way in the sphere I don't have to use the bathroom."

Is it just me or does it seem unlikely to you too that he will be able to hold his pee for 7 days straight?

Am I the only person who wonders about these little questions and inconsistencies in news stories?

He'll evacuate. In his sleep... maybe a wet dream?

    :m: Peace.

Of course it could be that he has attached a filter similar to your average fish aquarium to the sphere that removes the nasty parts of your average urine sample such as can be seen below.

But it isn't obvious that there is one from the pictures. However, you would imagine that they would hide such a device from sight. But a filter requires a pump, and what would happen to the currents in the inside of the sphere when constantly water would be pumped in and out? The man would have to fight against the currents constantly?

I hope someone fills it with formaldehyde and it pickles the little bastard instead. He'll end up in Damien Hirst colllection then.

The promo on his website states 'Drowned Alive'; isn't that a bit of an oxymoron? Unless he's dead by the time they fish him out of course.

I had pictured the glass acting like a magnifying glass on
a sunny day, boiling him alive. Your dream is far funnier!!

    :m: Peace.

"The bladder stores urine; it swells into a round shape when it is full and gets smaller when empty. In the absence of bladder disease, it can hold up to 16 fluid ounces (500 ml) of urine comfortably for 2 to 5 hours."

    Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urinary_tract )

The proof is in the pudding. It says that comfortably, urine can be held for 2 to 5 hours, although I'm fairly sure that the bladder holding urine 168 hours is a little bit of a stretch though

. Ditto for holding his junk in for 168 hours.

his biggest challenge will actually come from "overhydration", i would think. the skin requires oxygen gas, in order to not fall apart.

If he's in freshwater, won't he lose fluids through osmosis?

if it's fresh water, then he'd gain fluids. Water -> areas of higher salt consentration across a semi-permiable memberane.

That's not a stunt...he's probably just really bored and doesn't know what to do with his time.

I'd much rather believe that he'll hold his pee for a week than knowing that somewhere, David Blane is floating in a sphere of his own shit...

He won't last, methinks, but I've been wrong before. Still, I'm sure he's overlooked something of vital importance. And I still don't know why he's doing it...

If his system is completely empty, then his bladder will never fill up to 16 fluid ounces, though. It sounds like it only becomes uncomfortable if it fills up to that amount. An empty bladder for a week seems perfectly comfortable to me.

An empty bladder for a week means that his kidneys haven't worked for a week. That means he is dead.

when the bladder gets full dont the muscles stopping you from wetting yourself just relax forcing the pee out of you?

He's an illusionists so there's some catch we don't know of. Same way he lived through being in a block of ice and buried alive.

Yea, maybe the water inside is very oxygen rich, or something else.

I think it is simply a feat of endurance, not a magic trick.
