Dark City - with Jennifer Connelly. A great overlooked movie because of it's sci-fi undertones. Very Matrix'y a long time before Matrix came out. In Bruges - with Colin Ferrell. One of the funniest and most intelligent films I saw last year. Very existential.
I don't know anyone personally other than me who has seen it. When I ask people, they ask "What?" Yes, Colin Ferrell won a Golden Globe for it, it was a fabulous film but did not get shown in many theaters and was in and out of those theaters very quickly. Dream with the Fishes - with David Arquette was another great film that very few people know about. Shallow Grave with Ewan MacGregor. Great film, good writing and acting. Plausible story. I liked it a lot.
It's an Action/Comedy thing... with short people. It is a bit gory and curse laden but it's not horror it is action. The writing is brilliant.
Miracle Mile, with Anthony Edwards. Great film loaded with tension. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097889/ The Final Countdown, with Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen. Good 'what-if?' film that pussies out at the end! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080736/
I mean, it's difficult to come up with a truly "unknown" movie, but these are pretty good nonetheless. Street Trash Being There The Magic Christian The 7 Faces of DR. Lao Head Vernon Florida (documentary)
In Bruges, a brilliant movie, the trailer and marketing for the movie were poor, didn't do the movie justice. Was one of the best movies of 2008. I'd add Serpico (1973) Jean de Florette (1986) and Manon des sources (1986) Nae meorisokui jiwoogae (2004) (A Moment to Remember) The Prestige (2006) And Rocknrolla (2008), didn't do that well, I think it’s almost as good as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) (and Snatch), really enjoyed the movie.
The Pleasure...directed by Joe D'Amato (1985) Certainly one of the greatest erotic films ever made! Another called simply 'Melody'...directed by Alan Parker (1971)
I forgot one of my all time favorites. This movie has to be seen to be believed. It's not for everybody but I gotta say I laughed so hard... The Corndog Man Kinda cool too.
Blue Velvet, Lost Highway et al (don't know how popular David Lynch is elsewhere... you yanks have the advantage over us in the "culcha" department). Salute of the Jugger (Don't ask me why. It's crap, but I love it - watch for a very young Vincent D'Onofrio - he looked permanently stoned twenty years ago, too) Bad Boy Bubby They Shoot Horses, Don't They? And one of my favourites - "Hombre". I know, it's not unknown. On the surface, just a western. Underneath... love it.
i don't know whether these are unknown or not, exterminate probably knows them, but IT and pet sematary are great horror movies, so long as you put up with the age of them. pretty much anything made before the 90s, that isn't a kids movie, is unknown to my generation, so no point going down that alley. also some great anime titles like ninja scroll and vampire hunter d, for those of us unfortunate enough to be oblivious to the world of anime. while we're on cartoons, batman: mask of the phantasm was a surprisingly good and probably unknown, empire.com gave it either 4/5 or 5/5.
oh shit noticed my avatar Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! And strangely I haven't seen pet sematary through. Want to though.
