The situation for Natives has substantially improved, and continues to get better. I agree that the Canadian Government should do more to help Natives avoid this cycle of poverty, but as it stands now, the opportunities are there. I live in a poor neighbourhood with tons of Natives, some of which are happy they have the reserves to fall back on; others are apathetic, and some think they deserve more privileges. In any event, Canada is still the best place in the world to live in, regardless of its questionable treatment of Natives. By the way, I've taken courses on the history of Natives, taught by a Mik'maq teacher.
