oh- and I quite like to be thought as a comp nerd from others. I know more and knowledge is power.

No, not really. Some people just choose to work jobs with computers. Alot of people have much less respect for used car salesmen and strippers.

There may be an occasional teasing about pocket protecters, but no, not really. People don't mind that other people want to obsess on technology, at least around here.

Some people actually admire us because they can't use computers worth a fiddler's screw (and sometimes don't want to take the time to learn them - you know, 50 year olds we often times call computer illiterate or idiots?) They are impressed by the fact that we know such complicated things.

i dont know exactley what you classify as nerd as these days, but personally I find a nerd a lot more attractive than someone who is obsessed with their looks and their money. I dont know computers to the extent a real comp nerd would, but i know enough to get me by in the IT age. But I am obsessed with knowledge, not for the power, but for the experience. I have only recently (last 2 yrs) been introuduced to the nerd culture, as school life was about parties clothes and boys. I can admit that now, coz that is the past. So i am proud of you guys, you should be proud of your nerdy attributes. If it wernt for guys like you, industries such as calculator manufactoring, optomertrists and so forth would go bust.

Well I don't know why I even post on this one, At the end of the day it's not what you think of yourself that gets you termed a certain way it's up to the people that choose to make their views known.

I think we did at one point have a thread running on nerds and how the opinion and meaning has changed over time.

For now I'll just live in a cyberpunk delusionment, which basically allows me an escapist retreat in the safe knowledge that knowing a computer well isn't nerdish, it's just getting ready for the future and the plans that might come into being.

Being a nerd isn't a bad thing anymore. In the 80's intelligence was mocked. I don't think that is the case anymore.

No, I supposed you wouldn't want to call them nerdy, if you don't want a SR71 rammed up where the sun don't shine, lol!

Other than that, my friends and I pride ourselves in our so-called "nerdlike" behaviour. We look like normal people, act like norms, walk like norms; we're nerds in disguise. I personally have never gotten picked on, if the bully didn't want public humilation and years of therapy.

I'm a nerd, but of a rare variety. I'm a weapons nerd. Anything metal and poky and sharp, I know it. Or anything that protects you from those things. Anyone here ever hear of a Pata before? It's an Indian gauntlet sword. The gauntlet extends to the elbow and the blade (about 37 inches long) extends from the fist! (See what I mean by weapons nerd?

I know some about different types of historical weapons (including medieval and Japanese), but I haven't been into it as much recently.

Primarily, yes. But I like weaponry in general. Not guns as much though. Mostly edged stuff.

Another fun fact: The Japanese attached arrow heads to their shafts by binding it with paper. This would cause the head to come off in the wound, keeping it open longer and causing severe blood loss, while the heads of their yari (spears) had a triangular cross section. A puncture wound caused by a triangular blade tears the skin, and is difficult for the body to heal.
