While it is interesting to know about the attitude people have toward terrible parents, I am curious about attitudes relating to parents who might have had faults, but were not really bad people.

From my early childhood, I loved and respected my parents. Many of my friends seemed embarrassed, antagonistic, or had other negative feelings toward their parents, especially during teenage years. The saddest teenagers I knew loved their parents, but were embarrassed because they felt one or both parents did not compare favorably with other adults.

Some people I know have real hangups about not having appreciated their parents, especially those who have lost a parent without ever expressing love or respect. Some people I know get along very well with their parents, but had difficult relationships in their teenage years.
