If I became an adult without any religious schooling & was told that I must (under penalty of death) profess belief in some god or gods, I would choose to believe in the gods of ancient Greece latter adopted by the Romans using different names.

The human mind is grounded on personality firmware which define human nature, These firmware are common to all humans and define humans as a species. The personality firmware are like natural genetic based computer programs of the brain, which do most of the data crunching behind human nature.

For example, when you fall in love, something inside the brain is activated; firmware, which can trigger extreme high and lows of emotions and drive. It can also put you through the ups and downs of love and passion. The conscious mind cannot recreate this for itself. Rather it requires the firmware to run the dynamics. This is why falling in love is often rare; not based on will power, but firmware activation.

The gods of mythology were unconscious projections, who symbolized the various firmware, at least in terms of the layout of the ancient mind. The modern mind and firmware is slightly different.

For example, Mars was the Roman god of war. Mars symbolized the ideal warrior. His influence would symbolize the firmware of war active, giving the human his best day in the war game, with everything around him moving in slow motion and nothing able to touch him; fights like a god. The ancient Roman soldiers would pray to Mars, with the hopes of triggering that particular firmware (Mars will bless them). If the firmware became active, they would fight like the gods; all star day, like the basketball player scoring 60 points.

Ancient religions had many rituals, with these rituals tailored to the various gods; specialized firmware. If they could trigger the firmware ,this would allow specific peaks of performance and behavior. The female who would pray to a Aphrodite or the goddess of love and trigger this firmware, would be hard for any man to resist. This is why Rome was such a paradox of beauty, logic, cruelty and insanity; firmware triggers.

Monotheism changes this, with there being only one god or one set of triggers for all the firmware. This is a little different approach, in that instead of a focused induction, it would be more periodic and/or random. The Jews would often pray to induce their god of war trigger, but it never happens. Instead another firmware is induced due to the lack of focus for the triggers. This helped strengthen the ego or the conscious mind, who could not depend on the ancients god triggers for specific firmware.
