    Why do children have so much homework at such young ages?

    What happened to play and toys in school?

    What kind of people will these children grow up to be, without recess to help in socialising and play?

    my younger cousin gets tons and tons of homework, so much more than i used tog et at his age, he is always overwhelmed with work he gets hardly anytime to himself to play with his friends.

    he had to quit one of his martial arts training sessions that he took 3 times per week, he only trains for 2 days a week now,

    his mother told the school it was way to much but they said its the corriculmn and that by law he has to complete all his assignments, its rediculous, he is only 9 years old and he is getting stressed out by work! he gets headaches all of the time from stress and the doc nearly put him on anti stress pills!.

    we told him not to take the pills, he didnt take them. and his mother has told the school he will do no more than 1-2 hours homework per night,

    its getting stupid i know, kids will not be happy, but in this day and age it seems that happyness and playing are not needed. we need to be educated 100% and make money,

    peace.

    Does having more homework make children smarter or more dedicated? Seems to me they would just lose the drive to persevere, since it would become a hopeless rat race with no relief.

    in my cousins case, he used to love learning about new things, he always loved learning about historical events and he loved wildlife and learning about extinct dinosaurs and ice age animals,

    he would learn and research on his own for fun, nowdays he hates learning anything and sees it all as a chore and something he is forced to do, he doesent read his history books or dinosaur books for fun anymore, because he now looks at reading as boring,

    and he escapes it by playing video games, he also doesent even like learnign about the history of his martial arts but before all of this extra work and homework in school he loved all of the above. he still likes practising martial arts and training physicaly, but he has lost all interests in learnign about the roots of the style and where it was founded, to me he has not got smarter he has actualy dumbed down,

    he used to have such enthusiasm towards reading and learning, now he cant stand the sight of books and words,

    peace.

    When I was growing up, there was very little to learn. They'd just discovered that the Earth wasn't the center of the universe and, oddly enough, it was round, not flat! We spent 12 years in school learning that 2+2=4 and that "ain't" ain't a proper English word.

    Nowdays, kids still go to school for 12 years, but they have to learn everything that I did, plus calculus, physics, chemistry, astronomy, furrin' languages, English literature as well as furrin' literature,...... (should I go on?).

    We didn't have toys and play in school??? Ya' mean you did? We had to work out butts off just learnin' that 2+2=4 ...including lots of homework in order to do that!

    The kind who will illegally buy handguns and take them to school and shoot a bunch of kids for the fun of it. And the kind of people who will strap explosives to their bodies and blow up innocent women and kids.

    And, of course, the kind of wimpy little pricks who'll come to websites like sciforums and wonder why there's no "peace" in the world.

    When I was young....

    [flashback]

    Kindergarten was from 9-11 am with a half hour recess. We got fruit and cake from the school in recess, we had a music class and a play class, and we learned that round pegs and square holes are incompatible.

    Everyone was given color crayons and craft paper and plasticine. We had rides and toys for recess time. We played on slides and swings and jungle gyms.

    [/flashback]

    We didn't have much homework in grade school either. We had PT and play periods, library periods when we read stories, craft periods when we wove baskets and made stuffed toys or learned book binding.

    We had no extra tuitions or classes and hardly any homework. And we did pretty well. It was a lot tougher in higher school (after class 4) but by then we were into double digits agewise, so it was not hard to cope.

    I had an awesome childhood, I was one of the lucky ones.

    That's funny considering Finnish children scoring highest on the PISA test. They have a shitload of holidays. Start school only at 6 years old. It can't really be that they are studying their asses off.

    What are the real causes then for this success?

    * Equal opportunities for education irrespective of domicile, sex, economic situation or mother tongue
    * Regional accessibility of education
    * No separation of sexes
    * Education totally free of charge
    * Comprehensive, non-selective basic education
    * Supportive and flexible administration – centralised steering of the whole, local implementation
    * Interactive, co-operative way of working at all levels; idea of partnership
    * Individual support for learning and welfare of pupils
    * Development-oriented evaluation and pupil assessment – no testing, no ranking lists
    * Highly qualified, autonomous teachers
    * Socio-constructivist learning conception
