I suspect that once we realize that then i suspect it will be too late. We will have become dependent on the net and society would not be able to function without it. We will have also become so addicted to it that it would not make sense to pull a plug.

Consider the fear surrounding the Y2K bug. The world had become dependent on computers. 100 years ago there was no such fear.

Did you ever see the movie or read the book - The Machine Stops.

Society had become totally dependent on a worldwide machine that satisfied every human need. But a day came when the repair machanisms began to fail and very soon the whole machine stopped.

You'll have to read the book to discover the outcome.

Never heard of it but it sounds right up my alley. And yes it is one of those things that we would not do. Some would but if even one didn't then it would be to no avail. And you know there will always be that one.

The time frame could be 2012. We will think it is a persistent virus which may turn out to be a distributed intelligence program with a automatic spider algorithm built in. The data will be fragmented and kept in small chunks using sophisticated error correction such that pulling plug at one company does not affect the whole system.

Get ready for an Amish living. This time, we may fix the problem saying it is a rouge virus that caused havoc. what happens next time. I remember a posting like this in this forum not long ago (a la Terminator!).

So the fun begins...too bad for people living in big cities. No food, water or electricity....

    Any contigency plans?

EVOLUTION IS A WONDERFUL THEORY, but so far we only have one example of it-carbon-based life forms on the third planet out from the Sun.

If we had an example of it, it would not be a theory.
It's a theory, because we have no examples of it.

It's not very likely that anyone would want to pull a plug, since there is money to be made.

However, the possiblity of catastrophic failure is more likely.

At this point, a huge part of our lives are dependent on satellite communications.
When those satellites start crashing into each other, a cascade of failures is quite likely to begin.
The effect, of course, would be similar to pulling the plug.

This type of experiments should be strictly regulated.

Hey, you're standing in the way of progress.
If this is how life is to "evolve," who are you to stand in its way?

...many people believe that the mechanisms of society can't always be trusted to work for the greater good over the wishes of powerful individuals.
    *
    Can this be true?

*If, as it seems, the global brain is our inevitable future, and we can't turn it off, our only option might be to blend into the crowd. After all, if you're not exceptionally rich, powerful or clever, the global brain shouldn't need to disturb you. Back up your files, act dumb and keep your head down.*
    Utopia?

Viruses based on makeup are a real problem.

I dread the day when the smeared mascara virus shows up.

I guess some peoples brain does not work on spelling mistakes. OR may be it does! (looking at the meaning of "makeup" - the dictionary says: The way in which something is composed or arranged.

Latest news: With Gallium Arsenide chips, your computer will run 40 times faster (like a 2 GHz running at 80 GHz). Talk about supercomputing.

NOW, can AI be far behind......hmmm....
