Have any of you guys checked out the new USB monitors that Samsung / LG seem to be rolling out?

So long as you're not doing intensive 3d stuff the one I tried is seriously cool. Only two ports on my gfx card? Well... doesn't stop me from having another six monitors! (OK, I've only got three)

Apparently they all run on some DisplayLink chip that also supports monitors with ethernet / wireless interface.

Everybody I talked to always said it would be impossible.
I want to check them out.
Are they pretty widely available in real stores yet?

Did you try watching full color - full screen video on it?

i imagine it would be somewhat of a drain on your CPU(as it would be basically an additional onboard GFX port) unless they come with software to run them off the GPU on your graphics card.

I watched a DVD on it! There wasn't any loss of quality (@24 bit colour).

The CPU drain is less than I thought it might be - this seems to be the question everyone asks! When I was shaking the window about viciously it rose to about 20% - but it does that anyway when I do that on my main display. Apparently it only sends the information needed to update the display and it uses compression.

You can do six screens at once and I've seen such a setup running two or three videos. I'm guessing the load isn't that much - but like I said - you won't be getting oblivion to run on it but of course most games don't support more than 1, maybe 2, monitors.

Very good for my work - email etc. permanently open on left screen - dev stuff on the other two.

This is a silly review but covers the same chip. Conclusion is on page 4.
