I needed to free up space for another hd, in my case I chose a space atop a cdrom (with taking out another cdrom).
I put the hd, screwed (yes) it on one side, put an antistatic hd bag below it.
You can see action shots here -> http://piparmetra.net/pagrabs/hd/

    Questions:

    1. Will the antistatic bag not melt?
    2. Is it nothing extreme if the hd is a bit in angle?
    3. Is this a stupid thing to do?

    Thanx!

I doubt the bag will do much of anything in all truth.
I've done similar set ups in older pc's that I was using as storage machines on my network, and the angle never caused any issues. I've even had a HD cramed into the box vertically, with no mounting. It works fine. Of course, it is crammed in there, so it isn't really moving.

    Thanx for your input!

The main purpose of the bag is to lessen the angle a bit,
also it's a softer surface (this place is shaking sometimes because of the heavy traffic outside).

Might I suggest a new tower, they are very cheap today most cost under 50.00 US and they are very nice looking.

You can of course suggest, but I can't spend any money now (need to buy other equipment).

A lot cheaper and better option is just to buy a few long screws and put the hd steady in the cdrom place.

I agree with the fact the bag probably won't do much. If you want to keep the drive from the CDrom I would suggest a little bluetac, however do note that bluetac can burn quite well so you might prefer some form of Modelling clay.

failing that try Matchsticks with the cloated end broken off. (The bit that flames), just make sure what ever you pick is a bad conductor and you should be safe since concerns are more to do with electricity (and static) than heat/fire.

Get yourself a different case! It is the right thing to do. What you did should work, provided the bag is not over the breathing hole on the hard drive. It is so simple just to get a different case. Buy one second hand. I'm sure you can get one under $10 second hand. New, would be maybe $50. How many HDs do you have? Cases usually have room for at least two even on very old Pentiums 100mhz machines.

    I have 3 hd's.
I'll buy some long screws first though

No need for a new case if 4 screws can do the job.
The current setup will hold till then

Stryder, why do I want to keep the hd away from cdrom?

Stryder, why do I want to keep the hd away from cdrom?[/QUOTE]

Incase it rattles and causes scratches, which of course is cosmetic.
There is also the point on earthing however I'm not 100% how relevant that would be for you with your unearth power supply.

Earthing is not possible at my location. I keep the case on a wooden desk.
I don't care for scratches. Thanks for the answer

Just fold a bit of paper up and jam it under like a desk leg?

A new case would be nice. Take my advice... get drunk - then new purchases always seem like a good idea!

The rest is so well hidden it's not possible to find while drunk, i.e., too much sober determination needed.
Anyways, thanks for the advices on the new case business, but I really fail to see a need for it, if I can decently sort everything out with a few screws. :bugeye:
A new case seems like an overkill.
Besides then there's the whole reassembling that takes time I don't want to spend.

you could always just go to a second hand comp store and find a size reducing mount, that would change the size from 5' to 3.5 (or is it 3 1/4? never can recall..)
anyway, you could probably get that with the screws for a couple bucks.
