    Uh, that would be kind of a neat trick. I think what Michael is asking is whether there are secondary sources reporting the existence of Mohammed. I don't think there's much doubt Aristotle and Julius Caesar existed, Sam. Are you trolling?

    Actually, without knowing al Waqidi, the wiki entry on him states that

    I looked around the intertubes and there do appear to be a number of people that have quite an issue with him. Sounds like Geoffrey of Monmouth, the key author of the 'Arthur' legend.

    Actually, neither of your sources supports this conjecture. There's a certain mish-mash of European and Middle Eastern signatures, but little way to support your proposition. Actually, even the name Copt appears to be an Arabic imposition. You can't honestly think that after the Arab conquest everyone just, what: went home?
