What happens if you are left alone in the dark in solitary confinement for days on end? The result is called sensory deprivation and the human mind struggles to cope with it.

"The nothingness, that was extremely hard. Because the question in your head is how am I going to get through the next 10 minutes? Or months later, how am I going to get through the next day? Is there enough left in my head?"

"I remember one occasion waking up and having to squeeze my face and my chest and thinking to myself 'Am I still alive?'"

"I'm hallucinating! I thought I could see a pile of oyster shells, five thousand oyster shells, empty, to represent all the nice food I could have eaten while I was inside here."

    Interesting experiment.

Solitary confinement is barbaric and inhuman. It literally reduces the human stature to that of an animal. I cannot comprehend how anybody could support this counterproductive method of punishment. These types of things don't help anyone learn their mistakes or better themselves for the future; rather, it drives people to hallucinations and insanity, which is worse than what they were prior to the confinement.

I'd probably fall asleep and hibernate for a very long time.

Seriously, the problem is that people just think that our world is filled full of daylight some of the day. They tend to neglect all the other spectrum anomalies that are either natural or man-made. A room sealed off from outside light sources isn't necessarily a room deprived of various other waveforms, therefore you can never truly be totally deprived in just a normal room. You would have to go to great lengths to remove such influence through the use of TEMPEST equipment amongst other specialised methods of keeping things out. (Tin foil hats?)

Senator McCain was in a cell just like that when he was captured during the Vietnam war. He has a book out about his life as a prisoner as well as talking alot about it.

The TV program that featured this did not really say anything that was new or unexpected, apart from the fact that women are apparantly less susceptible to suggestion after sensory deprivation than men.
In fact, it seems to have almost no effect on women's suggestibility.

As for what it shows about the value of information gathered at places like Abu Ghraib, we knew that already.
    Worthless.

Turn mens minds to jelly and they will say anything you want them to.
