How the fuck is Clapton overrated? You can tell it's him with one note. There are hardly any players on Earth that you can say that about. The man makes his axe talk, and he doesn't have to shred at a hundred miles an hour in order to do it. Is it feasible that a few others can be considered to be up there with him? Of course. Does that make him overrated? Does it bollox! The man can play from the heart like few others ever could. Ah fuck it, let's start a war - Clapton fans vs. the rest. COME ON THEN!!!!!Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
I like Clapton but not that much. I think he is considered overrated because of this "Clapton is God" crap that came about... seriously, if Clapton is God then so is Santana, Hendrix, Duane Allman and a handful of other guitarists. Yes you can tell those few I mentioned by a single note also so Clapton is not that unique, above all others, that is. As for talking axes I believe B.B. King has that distinction (the crown anyway). The real musicians can play slow and don't have to "shred" as you mentioned but if you listened to more of the "shredding" guitarists you would find that they too can play it slow and soulfull... they simply prefer not to.Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Finally, I never felt Capton to be much of a "deep feeling" type of a guitarist. I get that more from B.B. King, SRV, Santana, Duane Allman, Dickey Betts, and a large number of other blues players... not that he can't or doesn't play from the heart, mind you, just not as much as others.

Apart from Hendrix, I don't recall the other two making such an impact. Anyway, what's with the monotheism? B. B. King is a legend in his style. However, that takes nothing away from Clapton's uniqueness as a player. King can't make it talk like Clapton and vice versa. King isn't 'better' than Clapton, although he is better than all of his copycats - as is Clapton. Malmsteen shreds so great that nobody can touch him at what he does. He is great at playing in his style, just as Clapton, Hendrix, and very few others are for the same reason. Big names, big impacts, but not as big as Clapton's (even the wonderful SRV!). You say you don't get as much feeling from Clapton, I say you're being too subjective - even for this type of conversation! Sorry mister, but that there Clapton ain't no overrated widdler, no sir!
1) John Squire 2) Noel Gallagher 3) Me Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! An alternative number three would be the lead singer/guitarist/(song writer?) from The Darkness. Have you heard how well he plays?! Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! 4) would be either Paul Simon or Art Garfunkel, whoever played the guitar on their songs.
I agree totally! Although I would've said Eric, SRV and Eddie Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! jane
G3 concert I saw the G3 concert a few years back with Joe Satriani, Kenny Wayne Shepard and Steve Vai. It was a small venue and towards the end they all came out and jammed together. It was unbelieveable! jane
Seems like it's time for a poll. You've got plenty of candidates and I don't think any important guitarists are missing from the ballot. Let everyone vote for three and rank the top 25, or whatever seems like a reasonable cutoff point.
I'm, not really a Clapton fan to be honest, but then I haven't listen to much of his stuff at all. I'll tell you who I do like though, and that's The Darkness. I didn't know if they were serious or not when I first saw them, on t.v. at Glastonbury, wearing 70's jumpsuits, but they're great! I don't know if the Lead singer would be in the top three, but he is certainly a better guitar player than me. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
1 - Tiny Tim (well that was a ukulele but its got strings) 2 - Art Garfuncel 3 - Davey Jones (of the monkees) The discussion ends here, everyone else is a talentless hack in comparison.
1. Hendrix 2. Hendrix 3. Hendrix PERIOD running for 2nd n 3rd are for instance: - Stevie Ray vaughn - Pat Metheny - Eric Clapton - The Edge - Matthew Ballamy (Muse) - Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (The Mars Volta) - Johnny Greenwood - Tom Morello - Slash Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! - Ben Harper P.S.: F*ck any credit for Steve Vai & Co..."anyone can play guitar" all this sport-guitar-wankin' does NOT make you the best... I recently saw Toto...and it was just making me sick to see these excellent musicians jerk each song to death (they virtually eliminated every bit of groove out of Marley's "could you be loved")
Oh no, please don't bring him into it. I don't like him or U2. However having said this I don't know much about the Edge, except that I saw him on TFI Friday once and he hardly said anthing, even when he was asked questions. I suspect he may have been in a mood with Bono (Boner) but I don't know for sure. Maybe he's a nice guy but I still don't really rate his guitar playing. Maybe his music is good, but with Bono fronting the band it's enough to put me off the whole lot of them. Just my opinion.
