AMERICA’s elder statesman of finance, Alan Greenspan, has shaken the White House by declaring that the prime motive for the war in Iraq was oil.

In his long-awaited memoir, to be published tomorrow, Greenspan, a Republican whose 18-year tenure as head of the US Federal Reserve was widely admired, will also deliver a stinging critique of President George W Bush’s economic policies.

However, it is his view on the motive for the 2003 Iraq invasion that is likely to provoke the most controversy. “I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil,” he says.

Greenspan, 81, is understood to believe that Saddam Hussein posed a threat to the security of oil supplies in the Middle East.

Tens of thousands die in car accidents every year.
    Thousands are murdered every year.

What's the big deal about people being killed for one thing or another? I mean, death happens all the time, every minute, every second, of every single day. It ain't no big deal. Dead people are dead people, whether by a bullet or in a car accident.

Well, if you're gonna' feel bad for some deaths, why not feel equally bad for all the other deaths?

Or are you using the Iraq War deaths to further your own agenda in some way?

Perhaps nothing to the neutral observer, which I don't think you can call Americans, since their support and inaction has played a role in the killing.

Do you think this is a surprise to anybody? Do you expect anyone to be ashamed or surprised? Or even care?

But that's true of most deaths. In the end, even car accidents are ultimately caused by people's support, lack of support, and/or inaction.

And there's no reason to place all the blame on Americans, because deaths occur all over the planet ....by the thousands every minute of every day.

It's just one man's opinion of history, Sam, nothing more, nothing less.

No reason for you to get worked up about it. Especially if you haven't even heard what he has to say yet.

I'm not "worked up" now, and I won't be "worked up" even after I've read what he has to say. And that, by the way, goes for almost anyone on Earth .....it's just one person's opinion, and shouldn't make any difference in my or anyone's life. If one person's opinion holds that much sway with anyone, then we're all in deep, deep shit.

It will be interesting to see how much impact his opinion has.

Has there been a bigger figure of authority to say this about Iraq? At least in America? I don't think even democrats have dared come out and accuse them of doing this for oil... have they?

Currently, the average american probably places the idea in the realm of 9/11 conspiracies, but if it comes to be accepted it should have an effect on politics. Hopefully negatively on the republicans and hillary.

More than 50% of Americans are too oblivious to reality to even understand what he will say.

Interesting statistic, Sam. Where'd ya' get it?

So what percentage of Indians will be too oblivious to reality to even understand what Greenspan will say?

So what percentage of all the world's people will be too oblivious to reality to even understand what Greenspan will say?

I mean, since you know all about Americans, tell us what you know about others of the world.
