    my experience so far:

I've been here for about a week.

Every time I've have a thought, or wondered about something, ive come to this forum and accessed it in detail. If I couldn't I'd just ask (start a thread) ... HUNDREDS of people reading it and dozens of people giving their opinion! You cant just pick up the phone and call people randomly and ask them their thoughts every 10 minutes (especially at 2:00 in the morning). Forums are incredibly handy and diverse.
Our interpretation of what we read in these forums can be argued forever but (in my opinion) the diversity of the ideas expressed here can't. So, to me, that is the forum's value. This is a powerful thing, being able to just access random people all around the world and ask them (in real time) what they think!

... ok, i think its pretty obvious im on the "value" side, my bias is pretty clear but im new here and id like to hear from everyone. What are your thoughts on the cost/benefit of forums?
So far ive only experienced benefit but im curious to hear all sides.

No I see what you mean about this board being great.
I used to just waste all my thoughts, and now... well I guess I'm still wasting them but at least they are stored to be viewed at a later date.

I really like this forum, its always there and it is usually willing to listen

Quote - "well I guess I'm still wasting them but at least they are stored to be viewed at a later date".

    I like that.

Why not get the best of both worlds?

    LOL ... ,

... ok, were definitely getting off thread here, i started this to hear your ideas regarding the cost/benefit of forums in general. Are they actually of value or do you think the cost is too high?

    just wondering.

Its worth every cent of the $3 I spent. This is the only forum with such a wide range of scientific details and expertise. I have to admit I spend too much of my free time here, then again I could be using that free time for something else, hence this forum bets jerking off.

I agree with the best of both worlds

I like forums a hell of a lot better than chat rooms, because people actually put thought in to their posts... most of the time.
