View Full Version : the TOP TEN ALBUMS thread
theonlyguyever 06-25-03, 05:56 PM Alright, I want to hear everyone's TOP TEN albums of all time!! yeah, so assuming you could only listen to ten albums for the rest of your life, what would they be?
NOTE - double albums (like Pink Floyd's The Wall) count as one choice. no box sets though.
i'll be back in 10 or 15 minutes with my selections... and let's try not to turn this into a huge fight or something, but instead just see how many of us have favorite albums in common..... cool? okay, good.

and hey, once this thread accumulates enough replies, i'm going to compile a list of the most-common albums on people's top ten lists, and then we can start a poll on the most popular album for sciforums users..... or something like that. so ha! i am indeed unique. :D

I too have the "guilty pleasure" of a rather indiscriminate soft spot for female vocalists, from Julie London to Renaissance to Garbage. Tori Amos is my favorite female vocalist.. not only a great vocalist though, she's also a great pianist and songwriter.. so damn talented..

Are you a fan of My So Called Life? Or maybe requiem for a dream? i actually have been following 30 seconds to mars since early 2001 or so, they're really great.. i'm a fan of requiem for a dream, fight club, panic room, etc., but i never made the jared leto connection before i fell in love with the music.. besides, he's a decent actor (especially in requiem, he was great), but i think his forte is in his music.... 30stm is completely original and groundbreaking, in my eyes.. really ambient, halfway progressive, so many different influences.... and they kick ass live too.. saw them play a great show back in, um.. november or so.. yeah, i love 30stm.

I'm one of the seventeen people who bought "Y Kant Tori Read" before we knew her real name. She was much more versatile then, I guess you could say she was inspired by all of Kate Bush's work, not just the angst. "Fayth" and "Fire on the Side" positively rocked. But even then she was best at the slow, sad stuff. "The Etienne Trilogy" is the best song on the album, and easily in a class with her best new work.

Matchbox 20 (now matchbox twenty)- Yourself or Someone Like You: This was my first CD, so it holds a special place. From '91-'94, dark and depressing music dominated the airwaves, then these guys came along. No, they aren't overly innovative, and yes, they admit they're a pop band. But every song on this CD speaks to me since I got it around Dec. of '97. I've changed a lot, but these songs remind me of the good, bad, and everything, and I can still relate to lots of them. They seem to mean even more as I get older.
Goo Goo Dolls- Superstar Carwash: I got into the Dolls with "Iris," but this early record shows they are (or were) so much more. Everyone in the band contributes to the songwriting (and it shows. Nowadays, the songs are written by one person, either John (guitar) or Robby (bass)). There's even one track with a country feel. The punk roots are slowly being shooed out of the songs, but the feel is still there, along with some damn good guitar solos and an amazing duet "string of lies"
Led Zep 2 and 4: Need I say more?
Nirvana- Nevermind: While I think, song by song, In Utero is better, I believe Nevermind is the better album. Bleach hides behind distortion and repetitous lyrics (with the sole exception being "about a girl."). This album, lyrically, is much more personal and emotional. The solos are few and, when they occur, add to the song, not just a spot for Kurt to show off. Also, Grohl's vocal back ups and drumming just make this an undeniable record to rock out too.
Smashing Pumpkins- Siamese Dream: The only band that I can always tolerate solos with. The only downside is there is no "band" feel since Billy recorded most of the guitar and bass and all the vocals. His voice still isn't perfect, but it's getting better during this era of SP.
Weird Al- Poodle Hat: Yeah, I think his latest album is the best I own. The styled parody songs (where he doesn't actually parody a song, but an artist's musical style) are abundant here, with a Zappa tribute f/ Dweedle on the intro (Genius in France), a Dylan tribute called Bob (the song is line after line of palindromes), and Ben Folds even does piano on his style track (why does this always happen to me). The band does a exact sounding trash day (for Nelly's "hot in herre"). My only real complaint is "Party at the Leper Colonly"...and the Polkas are getting very sound alike, though the concept for this polka is great (Angry White Boy Polka).
Weezer- Pinkerton: Lemme spell this out: I HATE EMO! Even though the songs all follow some kind of VCV format and Rivers is an evil dictator, the band still adds tons of stuff (listen to Rivers home demos, the harmonies just aren't the same). The lyrics are painfully honest ("The Good life") and sometimes downright disturbing ("Across the Sea" and "Tired of Sex."). Along with the well written songs and the harmonies of a pop group, this is Rivers last and greatest attempt at screaming (the whooas on TOS) and some kick ass guitar solos (nearly every song on the album). Also, I firmly believe the drums are very Nirvana like.
Ben Folds- Ben Folds Live: How can some guy and a piano rock so fuckin much?!?! 6 Words: Song for the Dumped, live version :) (though its on the included DVD)
Foo Fighters- The Colour And The Shape: Although it lacks the band feel, the drums kick some serious ass along with Grohl playing around with soft songs. Pat Smear adds some seriously great guitar licks. It seems the tension in this band pays off in great music.
1. Red Hot Chili Peppers - By the Way
2. Sheryl Crow - Tuesday night music club
3. Joan Osbourne - relish
4. Dave mathews - Under the table and dreaming
5. Jimi Hendrix - The ultimate experience
6. Yes - (shoot i forgot the name of the album)
7. Macy Grey - On life
8. Lauren Hill - The misdedutions of Lauren Hill
9. Bob Marley - Exodus
10. Big Mountain - (cant remember name)

So talking like you know what technical music is and probably never having heard oingo boingo means i can come to only one conclusion: kill yourself. first of all Danny Elfman was in Oingo Boingo...which you can also chalk up the simpsons theme song and every tim burton movie soundtrack. Yes at times they sound too 80's but its still fun to listen to. and you also suck for wallowing in your ignorance about the whole Tool/King Crimson thing and go buy Thrak

so I should kill myself because I don't like oingo boingo? is that what you're trying to say? because I have heard them and they suck. and I'm not going to kill myself because they suck and I don't like them.

I didn't wallow in anything. I said I love tool. that's it. you then posted a bunch of shit about tool sucking and king crimson being great and something else about oingo boingo..
