Sputnik 05-31-07, 09:42 AM Well done , Tabla .......... I like it very much .........reminds me of cafe del mar ....dancing on Ibiza... when I was younger ...... ambient ..........:m: :p
The laughing sequence on shalamar .... did you take that from the macarena ?? ;)
tablariddim 05-31-07, 10:07 AM No, my niece.
phonetic 05-31-07, 10:15 AM Nice one, tab. Well done mate :)
I find it hard to progress past the intro when I make music. Any tips?
What software do you use to make your tunes?
I know fruityloops pretty well now and I'm loathe to change, but I should try Reason and some of the fancier progs out there, I reckon.
tablariddim 05-31-07, 11:20 AM I made those tracks with some very old school equipment (1985-1990 tech). Atari computer, C Lab Creator sequencer, various hardware synths and Akai sampler. There are no ready made loops on them at all and most of the samples I made myself.
You can start a track with anything, it might be a loop or a drum groove or a simple chord/chord sequence, or even a vocal sample. That initial thing will give you a 'feel' or mood for the rest of the track.
Using your intitial sounds, create a groove with appropriate beats and bass line. Loop your intial groove and play around with different top lines or melody. I prefer my tracks to evolve and tell some kind of story, just go with the flow and keep adding and removing things to create dynamics. Eventually, you'll have a little musical 'story', now you can start to chop it up, add or change drumbeats/basslines and the thing will develop into something substantial.
As with everything, practice makes perfect and the 3 tracks on broadjam were the culmination of at least 12 years of producing music using that equipment, I was also a musician and songwriter in my teens so It helps if you've got music in you.
lixluke 05-31-07, 11:36 AM Which one is it on that list?
OK nm.
It's in flash so he can't post a direct link.
phonetic 05-31-07, 11:42 AM lix - http://www.broadjam.com/katchamis The song is Shalamar.
Cool. Thanks for the tips, tab.
I'm not that talented, musically. Well, I don't know all of the different notes that work together in certain scales, if that makes sense? I usually just make music by ear. If it sounds ok, then I'm happy.
I'll paste a couple of links to my latest ones. They're really just intros, though. I'm crap at transitions and progression.
tablariddim 05-31-07, 12:20 PM I'm totally ignorant when it comes to notes, chords etc; if it sounds good go with it. For melodies, you can work them out in your head and then just find the notes.
The song at number 3 in the top 10 is actually Firefly, which is rather strange because I got many more positive reviews for Bacteria, Shalamar has actually had the worst reviews, but it's only had like 3 so far and by artists that are working in entirely different genres, so that probably explains it, personally I love it.

Sex and drugs and rock n' roll, and murder, incest and deceit; clever cakes and talking goats searching for the meaning of life. Don't be confused, they are 2 quite separate stories.
