it makes people rich, gives even poor people hope that they could be something big one day.

it makes money for the state which in turn results in better spending for education etc.

    pleas add on.

    Welcome to sciforums, Streams.

I think that I will have to take an opposing veiwpoint on this topic.

My mother was a teacher during the time that the Florida lottery came into effect. One of the "big sells" on getting the lotto into place was that some of the proceeds would go to edcuation. It did, only they removed the funding already there in place and used the lotto income. In otherwords it was bait and switch. The politicians got some extra money to use for pork barrel, ect.

Poor people are the ones that really don't have the money to spend. They are the ones that think. "If I can buy enough tickets then I increase my chances of winning." Only the real odds amount to they are throwing their money away. It is a state sponcered gambling event. There is nothing wrong with playing the lotto for entertainment. There are those who will sink everything they have into it. After they did not win then they are left with nothing for the remainder of the month.

Very deep thought, here. I'll sleep on this one (it's rather late right now) and edit this into a repetoire of other reasons. In the morning.

But for a state like NC, which is surrounded by lottery states such as Va, Ga, and SC (soon), we are wasting our NC earned money to buy lottery from our neighboring states.

All those money lost explains our budget deficit.

By having poor people spending their money, that means they will not be drinking or getting high off of it, but rather is giving it to the betterment of other people, by letting government decide who gets what.

And they are only repaying for the medicaid or medicare or welfare that the gov. would already be paying for.

I would personally rather see lotto than gambling in a casino. At least the property values do not soar out of sight so that mom and pop stores can not stay in business.

I realize that you can not mandate where folks will spend their money. If it is lotto that they want they will have it. Those living close enough to the state lines will cross the border to get it. This does mean revenue leaving the state. Such is the case in Mississippi. We do not have a lotto. We do have casino's. People that play the lotto just leave the state and go elsewhere to get the lotto tickets. Most do have disposable income to do that though.

Another interesting thing is that there is the springing up of gamblers announamous club or whatever you wish to call it. That comes with the gambling. There is always someone who will claim they can not stop gambling, be it lotto or casino.

It makes poor people poorer. Almost nobody(almost) can make money from gambling in the long run. You can't beat probability and statistics. You gamble for fun but not for winning money.

One positive aspect of the lottery is that a percentage of the money the government gives out as "welfare" payments returns to its coffers in exchange for lottery tickets.

As for myself, I've never purchased a lottery ticket. Lotteries are little more than a tax on those who can't do math.
