I'm wondering how the adverts are put up on this site. The gun thread has many gun ads, while my Visionary Islamerica thread has (had) an international muslim marriage ad ... is it just keywords, or is there more to it ?

Don't like it? Get mozilla, noscript, and ABP.

 

I don't have ad blocking software and I've never seen an ad on this site. Where are they?

 

They fill the left two inches or so of every page - they go away if you are logged in though.

Perhaps that is why you have never noticed them. Otherwise, lacking ad blocking software or being logged in, you would definitely have noticed them. Sometimes they get so wide that you have to scroll left to right just to read a post - and I mean scroll like 4 inches! - very annoying...

However, just log in and you will not have any problems...
