my cat is sick and my parents refuse to take her to the vet.
i know alot of you have pets so im hoping maybe if i describe whats wrong you might know why she's broken and how i can fix it.

she keeps trying to curl up under our beds, but we dont want her geting stuck under one so we've put her in lving room. she takes very slow steps when she walks and sits down and meows every few feet. She wont eat she wont drink, she's been laying in the same spot since about 4 this after noon. (now 2am) she sat up twice to look out the window. but then kinda slumped back down. she looks really out of energy. and she's thrown up a few times.

as for her history, she's never really been sick besides the average kitty cold every now and then. she gets senior's cat food (she's 11) and vitamin and hairball treatment cat treats regualrly. she's always very energetic. she is not fixed and has never had fleas.

    any ideas?

Damn.. sounds a lot like what happened to my grandmothers cat. Too similar. I'm almost suspicious that it's nothing other than rhetoric (seriously.) Is she loosing hair?

Well, there's a good chance she has cancer (probably of the liver -very common) and is dying from obstruction of bowels. Although you probably would have noticed that she hasn't been eating for a while (as in months.) I hope that isn't the problem.

Hopefully it's just a minor flu or something. Heck, maybe she ate a bad meal

no she's not losing any hair. and she eats alot normally.. it would seem pretty sudden if she were dying of cancer.

    Food poisoning?

I don't know what to say. Honestly, I hope your cat's alright. It really sucks when they die.

    Well, night night

bad. it's always sad when a pet dies. anyway... maybe she's got an infection or something, a virus. i generally slump, lie down and don't eat when i have one. or it could be that he's nearing death.... is 11 yrs. old for a cat?

From what you described it sounds as if she is depressed

My cat had similar thing happening, except that he wanted to sleep too much. I took him to the vet and payed $500 to do all kind of tests, and they didn't find what's wrong, so they gave him antibiotic and put him on IV because he was too dehydraded. Two days later he was great, but I had to finish giving the rest of the 10 day antibiotic, which is not fun, and I had to check his butt temprature.

Take his temprature by inserting the thermomter in his buff. Damn I can't remember the proper cat temprature, but maybe other know.

    Hi NightFall,

How is your cat doing today?

It may be a kidney problem. It is so that older cats start suffering from this. (not always, but it is a fair chance) That would explain the not eating and drinking too.

Unfortunately, it can be various things what is wrong with her.

Best thing to do, is take her to the vet. If your parents are not willing to do so, then take her yourself.

Eleven years old is not that old for a cat. I have seen them from 24 years and even older. This goes for cats who go outside and cats who are kept inside the house.

I hope she will be alright soon and that you are able to help her get better.

(On a side note, cats who have an outside live too, wander off their homes when they feel they are dying. The crawling away under the beds is not a good sign in my opinion.)

My cat had symptoms like that one time. She had eaten one of my moms pills that she had dropped on the ground and hadn't picked up.

We took her to the VET and they gave her charcoal, and an injection. Then we had to play the waiting game at home. She was either going to die, or live. She lived. The cat couldn't move, meow, or really eat anything. She crapped all over herself. I had to wash her off and everything. Then I shocked myself by the idea that she could drink water. You just have to let it absorb through her skin. Which could work, I dont really know.

    Good luck. Keep us posted.

Miss Kitty went to the vet today.

I wish it were a virus.

She has glandular hepatitis. they put her on an antibiotic for her fever. for anyone who understand medical terminology, her ALT (???) is high. it is supposed to be between 12 and 120. hers is 964. it made sense at the vet but now ive forgotten.

we have to feed and water her with syringe things, and in three days she will either be better, or turn yellow. if she's yellow and sick, then there are two choices:

    1. hospitalize her, give her fluids/antibiotics through an iv and valum to make her eat. (aprrox. $250)

    or

    2. put her to sleep. (much less than $250)

im not sure which choice id make. if she's in pain and there isn't much hope, id put her to sleep and not make her suffer... but otherwise id hope my parents would be nice enough to pay for the other. I ook her to the vet today since everyone else though she had ate garbage or something. which means i payed for the office visit and payed for the blood work. im broke. but atleast they are more concerned about the cat though. my mom fed her a whole syring of this kitty baby food stuff they gave us and half a syringe of water. she threw it back up an our later, and she's really confused it seems. she tried to go in my moms room but i shut the door and she just stood there staring at it, like the whole world just moved and she didn't know what to do, until my mom finally went over and picked her up. her new home is a towel, a sweater and a pair of pj pants ontop of a heater vent. just really depressing to see her like that.

anyhow, someone asked if 11 was old. well, today we figured that she's got to be closer to 12, but her breed should live to be about 15 or 16.

if the limit is 12-120 and your cat has 964 of whatever.. then it must be bad. hope she gets better.

Yeah...liver problems. As I suspected. Just the thing that happened to my grandmothers cat (for different reasons of course.)

Listen, Nightfall, I really hate to tell you this.. But pretty soon(by the sounds of it), her hair is going to fall out - she wont be able to move AT ALL, and will be in much more pain. Yellowness will be the least of your problems. In other words, she's probably going to die - even with the medicine. If you can, I'd recommend putting her down right away. I'm normally against Euthanasia, even in animals, but this sounds like one of those cases where it is the best option. She'd have died by now in the wild. Keeping her alive is just prolonging the pain.

I saw a cat in a similar situation, and to be honest it was heart-breaking. We're talking about a cat that wouldn't allow me to touch it without scratching up my entire arm. And by the time we brought morely to the vet, he could barely lift his head. Let alone sink his teeth into my flesh.

    Sorry

well, the fever is still down, i think its for good. this morning she was drinking on her own, and alot of water at that! finished of one bowl by 8am. lol. (little desert bowls)she's been sleeping most of the afternoon, but her breathing is also back to normal. she looks a bit more a ease, and she kept down her lunch today. i keep checking her ears, but everytime i look at them i can't remember what they looked like before, so i wont know if they are turning yellow until its crayola.

elbaz the only bald spots she has in by her ears, and i think its just old lady hair becuase its been like that for atleast a year or two.. well.. that and where she was shaved on her neck for her blood work.. poor kitty got buzzed.

    airavata & Dearprudence
i didn't give her a hug (unless you count holding her down while my mom shot an antibiotic down her throat) BUT i did give her a wool jacket that she loves, and i think it means about the same in kitty-cat.

Aww. Im glad your cat is better! My friends laughed at this girl I knew because her cat died and she was all depressed! Seriously, I wonder what the hell is the matter with people that I hang out with.

Cute cat. Very cute. I wish I could so you a pic of Pua, I don't have a scanner unfortunatly. The problem with my cat is that she's about the size of kitten still. She's almost a year old, well wait, scratch that, she's a year old in a week.

She isn't exactly the size of a kitty. She's about one kitty plust 2/3 of another kitty. Still small though.

My friend Nina has a cat named Mr. Moo. can you guess why? (Size of a cow, I swear to god.)

I'm glad I'm wrong. Just don't want to see another cat suffer through liver problems again. You could tell morely was in a lot pain...

As long as she isn't shedding she probably wont die. Good WOrk. Hopefully soon, the two of you will be frolicking through vast, earth corn fields.

elbaz: she's not in pain. thats why were waiting. she ate a half of a chewable viamin treat today, and gave herself a little bit of a bath. when i came home tonight she had left her spot on the coat and we found her on my moms bed. i can't beleive she jumped up there since she hasn't even walked to her litter box (we put her there every so often to give her the opportunity).
so far she is still purring alot and she smiles, she just seems exhausted and little confused. tomorow im going to call the dr to see if she can run another test to check if her ALT level is down any. we will continure tryin to nurse her back to health until it appears that she is too far to help. if she is suffering, we wont put her through more than she needs.

thanks to everyone for your caring words, it means alot to me. and to kitty too.
