I received an email yesterday informing me of a certain concert bootleg recording. I should have a copy in the next couple days:

You might find yourself asking, "Who? What? Why?" But this is a special show. As my friend noted, "I listened to an Al Green show from 1972 today, but I don't think I can match having a show recorded the DAY that I was conceived."

My partner wanted to go hot-tubbing at this questionable establishment in the University District for Valentine's Day. A fine idea except for the fact of the establishment. I wasn't enthusiastic. Walking by the Rainbow, we spied the poster for the Crack Sabbath show, and, hell, it's Skerik for five bucks.

    Saved by Skerik.

It was a fine show with good beer. We went home and, as it turned out, made ourselves a baby.

It is entirely possible that, without the power of Skerik to get me out of hot-tubbing, I would not have a daughter today.

    Crack Sabbath rules.

And, probably tomorrow, I will have in my hands a soundboard recording of that very show.

    How fucking cool is that?

I have mountains of bootlegged stuff from when I was a bad boy and had Napster, LimeWire, Imesh, Morpheus and BitTorrent. I don't bootleg anymore because I have this weird guilty conscience. Plus I have a really good job and I find myself saying to myself, "Self... if you like it so much, just download it from iTunes." On the whole, I really don't feel that bad if the artist is a prick or their music sucks (i.e. I just downloaded "Me So Horny" by Two Live Crew for shits and giggles -- how's that for pathetic syllogism), but I try to avoid anything bootlegged form an artist I like/respect. At the end of the day, however, I just try not to download anything illegally...

    ...um...

    ...except porn.

    That's another story.

I've never been into bootlegs, ... live concerts yes, and I stopped counting the number of bands I'd seen when it was 100 in 1987, so I used to go a lot, but bootlegs of live performances never interested me. Maybe if the bootleg was of a gig I'd been at, but as none of mine ended up with baby making (although a fair amount of trial runs) I guess none mean as much to me as this does to you.

I guess a bootleg of the first big gig I went to might appeal, ... it was 'Status Quo' in 1984, .... wow, it was loud, didn't half make my flares vibrate.

I think it's perfectly acceptable if it's not available commercially. I think some illegal d/ling is also ok... within reason.

I illegally d/l quite a bit of music in fact, mostly from the blogs & a lot of that is unofficial remixes, dj mixes, stuff that isn't out yet & such. But I don't feel any guilt over this. Mostly because I spend an average of £50-100 a month on vinyl & a lot of the stuff I've d/l'd I've ended up buying anyway. As a dj it's great way to hear new tracks & find out about new artists.

I've got a bit of a problem with people who only d/l stuff & never buy it. I see it as disrepectful to the artists & the music itself - if you like it so much, buy it & have a much better quality recording.

PS. @Tiassa. Hooray for your bootleg baby.

@Superstring. C'mon man, Me so horny is a absolute anthem, it's totally worth a pound.

Damned straight. I buy stuff I like, and might 'borrow' some stuff from time to time, (from friends who have bought it though, we used to tape each other's vinyl when we were kids too, so no change (in fact a lot of the stuff I have 'borrowed' is stuff I have on vinyl, and mates have gone and bought on CD, and even though I can rip vinyl, I don't, it's a pain the arse, I'd only do it for something I really wanted and couldn't get via any other means))

I don't buy downloaded music either. I want the CD, I want to rip it at a decent rate, xfer it to any device I own, and enjoy it anywhere, and know that if my HD fails, I can rip them all again.

If your HD fails, Apple are just going to smile and take the money again. That sucks. Also, I don't get the pricing of downloads. I can often buy the CD online, and get it delivered next day, cheaper than I can download. I get a product, and a service, for less than Apple provide a second rate service. Go figure.

    Yeah, right on.

I totally resent paying for music & not getting hardcopy.

I have a closet full of free CDs. Sometimes if I think the artist is underrated I'll buy one of their CDs, but usually I just waste all my money, so it's much more convenient to get it free.

I download a lot of music and generally don't buy CD's. In fact, I generally don't pay for music at all.

Instead I make it a point to go to the concert if a band I listen to comes around. Normally I'll buy a ridiculously overpriced t shirt too, because I know most of that money is going to the band and not some crook record company.

thats what i do, but i also buy the CD aswell, has downloading it, i always keep my original cd's in perfect condition and they are never played!

i also buy over priced t shirts at concerts, i bought a MSI (mindlless self indulgance) shirtfor £20 knowing the money went to the band and not some fat eating person who makes money without even listening to the band,

i also have an original Tre Cool (drummer from greenday) drumstick that the threw into the audience in Cardiff!! and that will never EVER be sold!!

Shame on you. Go buy some music.

As much as everybody knows that artists make more from touring than they do records it isn't uncommon to have a 3rd party deal with the merchandising which leads to an even smaller cut of the profits going to the artist so saying you buy a t shirt doesn't really make up for d/ling a bunch of albums does it?

What about those bands whose albums you've d/l'd they haven't played in your town? Or the ones who don't do the whole merchandise bit?

I'm not saying that absolutely everything in your collection has to have been paid for but I think the balance should be swinging in the other direction.

If the artist is signed to a label that has ties to the RIAA there's no chance I'm giving them $18, $17 of which will go to that label. Same with iTunes, where an artist might be lucky to get 10 cents of each track purchased.

It's time for them to change their business model, record labels are obselete. Distribution is free now, word of mouth advertising is a byproduct of free distribution because it's very easy for someone to download a couple tracks to see if they like the music their friend recommended. I'm happy to support artists, I'm not happy to support labels who use my money to sue people and push for oppressive laws nobody wants.

So instead of giving the artist some money, you give them no money.

That's the weakest bullshit argument I've heard.

Well let me ask you something. If the federal government needed to fund its illegal wiretapping program and told you for every $20 you donate they'll give $1 to charity, would you feel good about giving them the money? Would you still feel good when they take the other $19 and use it to spy on your phone calls and emails?

If an artist wants my money they can either a) perform a show near me (basically anywhere in Germany) or b) agree to be part of a label that isn't associated with the RIAA.

I've got tickets for The Weakerthans this Sunday. 20 EUR for the show, probably 20 more for a t-shirt. I don't know how much of this they get after expenses, but I'm betting it'll be more than a dozen CD's would have netted them.

Bootlegging, in my eyes, is theft. You want to steal? Fine by me, I couldn't give a shit. But bragging about your criminal escapades on a web forum? That's obnoxious.

Abstraction to absurdity. Stick to the topic.

That would be fine if you didn't then go and steal artists products that didn't meet your selfish criteria.
