Talking so much of tolerance... I wonder why you are so willing to challenge and change the beliefs and traditions of the other people... Just because you think you are right shouldn't mean others are wrong, unless if West want a uniform world dominated only by western way of thinking! A teddy bear with such a labelling would more or less cause limited negative reactions in every muslim society in the world ... the Sudanese reaction is excessive (though we do not know the full story, but it is said that she was told of the sensitivity of the issue which she refused to heed), however all this is because muslims are so much fund of their prophet that they would not let any negative image of him be propagated... and, given the Satanic Verses, Danish caricatures and many so examples, muslims absolutely do not trust the westerners' intentions on this issue... If the West really want to promote tolerance, it should start with itself, their culture of no respect for the sacred of others is not much constructive...

Sometimes, if one person is right, the other person must be wrong. And executing someone for giving a teddy bear the wrong name is WRONG, no matter how you slice it. If she's offended the parents, fire her. Hell, deport her. But whipping someone to death for so trivial an offense is absurd and barbaric. I'm sure this event will do a lot to encourage other potential aide workers to come to the Sudan to help out.
I've just purchased 15 bears, one for each day Gillian was in jail, and have shipped them to the Sudan Embassy: Diplomatic Representation in US: Chancery: 2210 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20008
