Sign language. Even someone who is blind, deaf, and mute can communicate in this manner.

Yes. But do they see language in a different way?

What if some one was born: blind, deaf, mute, and without proper nerve endings to feel with their hands? What kind of reality would such a person live in? LOL

I suppose the only thing they could detect is food, pooping sensation, breathing sensation..... all else would be blank, no?

I fail to see why you could find that amusing (re: your LOL). That's a very childish attitude.

When I came upon the thread the startup post had been deleted. Shortened to a null anyway, the software doesn't allow a member to delete a startup post because that deletes the thread. There was only one short reply, it looked like it had been posted before the original was deleted, and it didn't make any sense without its referent. I figured I'd put it out of its misery. Sorry if I screwed up.

Was that supposed to be Morse Code or something like that? In the future I'd be happy if you'd give your discussions a more descriptive title. It's not easy to attract people to Linguistics.

No, you silly!
The "..." is what I wrote to signify a deaf-mute person! Of course, nobody got the idea...

LOL!

No, the first post was never deleted. As I said, it was supposed to be "...".

Nope. A deaf-mute saying something.

In the future I'd be happy if you'd give your discussions a more descriptive title.
Couldn't be more descriptive! LOL!
It was a deaf-mute "speaking". I thought someone could figure it out, given that it was on the linguistics forum....

It's not easy to attract people to Linguistics.
Indeed...

Actually our bodies have many more senses than the traditional "five."
  • Kinesthetic: knowing where our body parts are, which way they're oriented, and how fast they're moving. We can all touch our wrists to our ankles in the dark, no matter where our ankles are, without hitting them too hard.
  • Gravity: knowing which way is down. The fluid in our semicircular canals tells us that.
  • Heat: actually "touch" is a couple of different senses which operate through different kinds of nerves, e.g. temperature and pressure.
  • Smell and taste: actually not such distinct senses and there are more than two of them. Our tongues have four different types of receptors: sweet, sour, bitter and salt. The rest of what we perceive as "flavor" is actually sensed by the nerve endings in our nose from the vapors that travel up from the back of our mouth, so "taste" is really a combination of taste and smell.
  • Pheromones: These are chemical vapors picked up by our noses, which trigger sensations into our olfactory lobe, except we don't smell any odor consciously. You could call them unconscious smells. The primitive part of our brain has synapses that change our mood when it picks up one of these. I am unaware of any research being done in this area except to have determined that it exists. If you ever feel spooky when you walk by something that appears innocuous, it could be exuding pheromones that you remember from your childhood, or perhaps a reaction inherited from our primitive ancestors.
As for missing hands, there are lots of people who rise above that. If you get on a few more mailing lists you'll start getting sample Christmas cards from the Mouth and Foot Artists Association. Without Googling it, I'll bet that the nerve endings are as dense in your lips and tongue as they are in your fingertips.

And yes, I agree that the LOL was a little inappropriate. Are you positive SciForums doesn't have any members who read the posts with their tongues through a Braille interface? Do you want this to be their introduction to you?
