Right now India is teetering between ideology and ambition.

There are six problems that need to be addressed for successful resolution of the crises:

    1. the bleeding hearts and noble minds of NGOs that sees every effort of the US, World Bank and IMF as suspect *cough*

    2. the militant lobbying of a Beijing-sponsored Left who admire the "human development indices" of China without recognising that the Chinese regime does not have to bow before the legislature and constitution against its natural authoritarian tendencies

    3. the sycophantic mindsets in the Congress Party who overpower the real compassionate leadership both of the Congress Party (Sonia Gandhi) as well as the Prime Minister, a born reformer, with their tired outdated ideas espoused since independence and found wanting

    4. the petty hoodlums of caste and regional groups, pimples on the face of the country, supported by followers who are essentially outlaws, who keep trying to drag India into the underworld

    5. a recalcitrant bureaucracy that hankers after the perks of their jobs (a leftover from the Raj) but have no real sense of service

    6. a judiciary that seems to prefer governance to justice; political cases and public litigation is expedited at the expense of individual civilian cases that languish for years. And the court is busy appointing monitoring committees that are not accountable to the police.

Where do we go from here?

The problems are not with Pakistan per se but with sectarian forces operating from Afghanistan via Pakistan and the complicity of some wings of the Pakistani government and local militant forces. Its somewhat covered under problem number 4 (actually this thread is only about internal conflicts, minus external influences and is related to modernisation of the country's infrastructure)

IMHO: India's main risk is it that economically it will become like Brazil. (India is already is world's most stratified society socially by the cast system.)* I.e. A few very rich and masses than can not earn a living (children dying of malnutrition, simple diseases, etc.) or even read.
    ----------------------------------------
*In social area, Brazil is one of the most advanced in the world. Only in the upper class is the color of your skin main factor limiting choice a lover/wife etc. A racial remark can send you to jail. Etc.

That's advanced alright ...one remark sends to one prison! If people don't like other people, then just throw 'em into jail! I love that kind of "social advancement"!

They should have independence from the oppressive Indian government! They've lived on that land for thousands of years ...India has no right to claim that land as their own!

Yep, the land of milk and honey ...bureaucracy at it's best.

Call England to come back in and fix the mess.

You can dislike anyone you wish as much as you like. You are not allowed to make fun of them in public because of the color of their skin. (Express your POV about them in terms that could apply to anyone and now harm will come to you. E.g., call them social leaches, welfare bums etc to your heart's content, but do not call them Portuguese equivalent of "Stupid Nigger" etc. in public.) First offense is usually a warning, and then next few are fines then Jail.

BTW, would you like to visit me in Brazil and discuss the relative merits of the different skin colors in public?

I thought India was doing alright? It takes time - but I think in the end they'll be ok. Everyone has to start somewhere and India has a large population - it'll take a little longer but as the middle class expands things will smooth out.

That would probably work the best in all seriousness.
After he has made the proper changes, he could revert power back to Parliament, but there is always the risk that change occurs too fast and ends up backfiring (like The Great Leap Forward in Chinese communism).

Oh no! We're going for a hereditary family oligarchy.

    You know, like in Cuba.

Type "ethnic conflict - india" into the Google box and hit 'enter'. You're not only gonna' be surprised, you're gonna' be shocked ...especially after reading some of Sam's posts.

Type "government corruption - india" ...and hit 'enter'.

Type "religious conficts - india" ....hit 'enter'.

Type "social injustice - india" ...hit 'enter'.

Type "hunger, poverty - india" ...hit 'enter'.

If you think India is "doing alright", then Palestinians and Israelis are the best of buddies!

We've gone from being a Third World country with a 12% literacy rate in 1947 to a 73% literacy rate today, in 60 years.

Old patriarchal ways, tribal laws in many parts of the country plus remnants of colonialism still persist.

The only advantage we have over others would be our thirst for education and the fact that anyone can make it big, like Ambani.

The reverence for education within India will be her saving grace. It has single handedly brought us where we are today and in another 50 years we'll be competitive with the world in all major spheres. After the short stint of the BJP and the politically engineered riots in Gujarat, which sad as it was, lost the fundamentalists their foothold in the country, we have an economist as thePrime Minister and expats breaking down the door to invest in the country.

Finally, money talks and poverty and unemployment being a major issue, it will help us tremendously to have a better per capita growth.

A third advantage (after education and economic growth) is that most of our population is young. We are at the age where we can produce, we have no lack of expertise at any level and plenty of labor to sustain our manufacturing jobs.

Today, all options are stacked in India's favor.
All we have to do is reach out and grab them.

Though I object to some aspects of Indian society, I think I shall stand as a midpoint between SamCDKey and Baron Max:

India is a good country overall, but it is riddled with shitholes and monumental problems.

I think that statement might well apply to every nation on Earth in this era of globalization.
