No, Picard asked if a concentrated phaser strike would work, if that was true, then the energy would have been focused in the single phaser strike. If anything, it was likely that the Enterprise was using power faster than the arrays could recharge. Thus, it ran dry.

Hellblade, the problem was, and if you looked at the damage model you'd see, that most of the phaser arrays had been severely damaged, if not destroyed, the enterprise was running without a working warp core (or auxiliary generators for that matter - she was on pure secondary power from the impulse fusion generators) and had to draw power from life support just to get to full impulse - there wasn't much power left to CHARGE the phaser banks. It wasn't that the banks had to stop firing... there just wasn't any power left.

undamaged, she could fire them all left, right, and center with no problem as long as she wanted.

Ah right, I forgot all about the warpcore!:bawl:

And yes, I know about the damaged phaser array, but not all of them were damaged.

I suppose that would be a flaw in my theory then, but my point on the matter stands for the weapon's yield, as well as the torpedo speed.

that scene in ST10 might be another mix-up of watts anf jules. phasers down to 4% is something that makes no sence. in all other examples when they stated phaser intensity in % they usualy ment power, while in this case it probably refers to energy, since i don't see how can their weapons can be limited in power. maybe the damage they suffered to the weapon systems was directed at the EPS conduits, so with many of them destroyed they could only chanel enough energy per second for a 4% intensity burst. still the following dialog betwean Picard and Data implies that it's probably their energy reserve. but if so, how come they still have containment fields, kife suport, gravity... on the other hand i can't see of a way to damage the EPS without going through the arrays first.
this is one of those bad plot devices which makes me dislike ST10 !

For the first evidence, a troop transport 21 or so years before IV, had guns in the upper range of 200 Gigatons. Trek ships have trouble in the Megaton area, so they are screwed.

A ISD could render a whole planet unusable in an hour(s), by itself. It doesn't need more than Twenty ships.

The Millennium Falcon in IV went through Alderaan's debris field a bit before it finished exploding.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.

Of course the siths would dominate this arbitrary contreversy. The dark side force power: choke, spasm, lightning, death, plague; no opposition could resist. Go starwars!!!!! go starwars!!!!!! But from what era. the sith era, first trilogy, new hope, legacy of the force. Stargate is cool too, but not worthy of recognition among the sci-fi giants. Go starwars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The heaviest damage the ISDs took in the Hoth asteroid field was loosing a sensor dome. And they spent days there. What do you mean, 'screwed'?

Really, care to actually prove this?

Despite the fact that 20 ships can destroy 30% of a planetary crust in five seconds?:bugeye:

Um, a UFP ship can destroy a planetary crust in 11 minutes. Twenty ships could do it in 40 seconds.

No it didn't. And in any case, we didn't see them get hit by anything, so that hardly matters. Not to mention we saw that the Empire was afraid...not reluctant, AFRAID of entering the field near Hoth. In fact, it was stated that to do so was suicide.

    Care to explain this?

There's absolutely no onscreen or dialogue evidence suggesting a 200 gigaton yield for any Star Wars weapon aside from the Death Star's superlaser.

Starfleet doesn't require 20 ships either. A single federation ship in the TOS era could lay waste to the entire surface of planet. In fact, this ability is the crux of Starfleet General Order 24.

In the TOS episode entitled "A Taste of Armageddon," Kirk orders the Enterprise to execute General Order 24 if the government of the planet Eminiar does not release the hostages and himself within 24 hours.

Then, in TOS episode entitled "Whom Gods Destroy," Scotty is fearful of bringing the Enterprise weapons against a planetary shield for fear of destroying the planet's surface.

    taken from StarDestroyer.net :

"The dangerous asteroid belt in the Hoth system was formed billions of years ago by the collision of two planets. Millions of boulders and rocky asteroids careen through space in orbit together, forming a deadly swarm and a menace to navigation. Entering such a field with a spacecraft would be sheer suicide."

aperantly this was quoted from a novelization of ESB

There is absolutely no proof that ISDs, or even SW ships have weapons in the gigaton range. Gigatons would easily be able to screw over a planet. So, why even need the death star if your weapons are already that powerful?!?

Also not to mention Saq's calculations for ST firepower.

last night i read some articles on the developement of naval warfare in the 20th century. when dreadnoughts(modern battleships) were mentioned, the author loosely classified them into:
    battleship-relatively slow, powerfull guns, armour to match their firepower;
    battlecruiser-comparative to battleships in size and displacement, similrar or on ocasion greater firepower, but trade-off betwean armour and speed. much less armor for larger and more powerfull engines;
    mamooth-a really heavy battleship in terms of armour and guns. the most masive and pwerfull ships ever built. speed comparative to battleships;
fast battleships-a well balanced state of the art battleship. tech improvements allow for adequate armour and firepower compared to contemprary battleships, but with speed to match the battlecruiser or slightly less.

so i tryed to feet the UFP large ships into this categories, but i could not really reach a satisfactory conclusion. i.e. the large nacells and impulse engines on the Excelsior(in its prime) and the Sovereign led me to initialy classify them as battlecruisers. however the nemessis fight (Basen Rift), showed the E-E as quite resiliant and well armored. is it possible that Excelsior and Sovereign were initialy planed as Fast Battleships? Excelsiors obviously turned out to be very succesfull and eventualy were turned to ships of the line, and later as main cruisers (with the advent of Ambassadors and other larger ships). both Excelsior and Sovereign share many common features i.e. both are state of the art large ships.

GCSs are most likely battleships, since they can obviously take as much punishement as they can give and are not quite the fastest or most agile ships around, but form the backbone of most fleets.

the GCS-X might be the only glimpse of a mamooth that we are presented with.

this lives us a bit short on battlecruisers. possible candidates are Akira, Nebula and Ambassador. i'd put the Nebula in the Pocket Battleship variant, since they apear to be cramped GCSs, and slower too. now the problem is that neighter the Akira or Ambassador quite feet the battlecruiser role when speed is required. what do you guys think?

    Dreadnoughts
Take note on the UFP in this era. Their only ships that could possibly count as dreadnoughts are the Prometheus and the Sovereign class. Both hold a large number of photon launchers, phaser arrays, and have regenerative shielding, ablative armor, and advanced computer systems (although the Prometheus is more advanced). The Klingons have only one dreadnought, and it's likely weaker than the Sovereign. The Negh'var seems mostly to push towards the idea of conquest, and is pretty heavily armed. Thus, I suggest that this is the Klingon Empire's first push towards a more modern fleet, rather than using old proven designs (as this has given way to them having to upgrade the older designs, that are over a century old).

The Romulans are a bit harder, as you can see, the Scimitar clearly counts as a dreadnought, although one could argue if the Romulan Star Empire would dare use this class after the negative history surronding the class. The Dominions created the Founder's Dreadnought, mainly as a point of making a really powerful warship. The prototype alone easily took out a Defiant class starship (USS Reliant), and was said to have vastly superior capabilities to a Galaxy class starship. The final project is even larger, and very possibly much stronger.

    Battleships:
The UFP doesn't officially have any battleships, but rather call them explorers, but to everyone else, the UFP is just sugar coatting their ships. Thus far, the Federation has the Galaxy and Nebula class as their battleships. The Galaxy I series displayed a great deal of trouble against keeping its warpcore safe, and some blame the amazing complexity of a ship that advanced. The refit lead to the Galaxy II series, which replaced the older conduits with more reliable ones, with the hopes that they would be able to reduce the risk of a warpcore breach. Although this fixed most of the problems, the class again refitted only about eight years after it had been released, creating the Galaxy III series. This new ship design featured a more combat oriented bridge, more advanced sensors, and a more stable warpcore. This design proved to be very efficient when the USS Enterprise D took two photon torpedoes to the hull before her warpcore was breached. Although the ship was lost, the other Galaxies were proving to be very reliable.

The next known battleship is the Nebula II. The Nebula came to birth when the Federation needed a stronger fleet presence in the face of the Romulans coming back out of the shadows. Rather than building the insanly complicated Galaxy class, they created the Nebula, cutting out large portions from the Galaxy class design, and fitting her towads specific missions by adding a pod upon the top of the ship that would enhance the ship's capabilities 15% above that of a Galaxy. In return, the Nebula was 20% less efficiant than the Galaxy was at everything else. At first, this was mainly used for scientific purposes, but the need for a higher payload of torpedoes became obvious. Thus, the UFP replaced the sensor pods with weapon pods, each holding six launchers and a total of 375 photon torpedoes. Added to the standard complement of 125 photon torpedoes that the Nebula carried, and the ship became a power house that rivaled the Galaxy. The ship's shield generators and SIF were enhanced, but still lacked behind the Galaxy by 15%. Thus, the Galaxy had somewhat less offensive power, while it enjoyed a greater defensive power. With these enhancements, the Nebula II was born.

The Dominion's battleship of choice is the Vorta Battleship. This class is heavily armed with phased poleron beams, photon torpedoes, and sub-space weapons. The battleship is often deadly to most targets due to its phased poleron beams, which are made up of an incredibly dense amount of phased poleron particles. These particles act like a needle, punchering most shields, no matter how strong, and hitting the hull of the ship directly. Unfortunately, due to the method of these weapons, at least 50% of the particles are harmlessly bounced away by the deflector shield, not even training the ship of any power to do so. Thus, they are much less effective than most ship weapons, and why even though their weapons pass through, the opposing target might have a fighting chance. This lead to a horrible result when the Alpha powers gained the ability to counter these particles, modifying their shields to ward off the weapon. This lead to a large drop in the effectiveness of the battleships, thus they began to carry heavier loads of torpedoes to make up for the loss of the Dominion's favored weapon. It is also noted, that to help make up for this flaw, some battleships replaced some or all of their poleron cannons with phaser banks.

The Romulan Star Empire's most famous and dangerous warship is the deadly D'deridex, a ship that is double the length of the Galaxy class. This ship was at first thought to hold at least equal footing with the Galaxy, if not greater. However, it was discovered by the UFP Defense Appartment, that the D'deridex had a lot of wasted space in order to appear more intimidating. While this gave shock value when the warbird would decloak, the price was that the Romulans used lighter armor, and had to cover more area with their shielding. This also limited the manuverbility of the battleship, making it a easy target during fleet engagements. Many speculate that the Romulans had hoped to create a battleship that appeared to be a dreadnought, but when their ship failed to provide the buck for the bang, the UFP began to suspect the ship was mostly bluffing its power. During the Dominion War, it became crystal clear that the warbirds had an amazing offensive capabilities, their Disruptor Cannons proving to be only 5% less effective than an entire phaser array. However, while this made an effective volley...the warbirds were terrible when it came to defending their rear. Thus, the Warbird is suspected to be about the same level as a Nebula II starship.

The Borg also have a battleship, but it was only seen once by the crew of the Voyager. The ship was amazingly armored, and was claimed to be a Class 4 Tactical Cube by 7 of 9. The cube displayed firepower far above that of a normal cube, and UFP experts believe that the cube may be anywhere from 15%-35% stronger than the average Borg cube, with enhanced defensive capabilities. According to 7 of 9, the Cube had regenerative shielding, high capacity first and secondary shielding, plasma torpedoes, Borg lasers, and transwarp, as well has heavy ablative armor.

    Heavy Cruisers
The UFP has three Heavy Cruisers that make up their ranks. The strongest of them being the Akira class, a class inspired by the Nebula. This class is faster, has a higher warp speed, and a more advanced shielding than the Nebula II, but also a smaller load of torpedoes, weaker shielding, and slightly less armor. Still, this ship is easily one of the UFP's favorite new toys, and they're being mass produced perhaps more than any other type of class. The second one is the rebirth of the Excelsior with the new Excelsior III. While the Class II series had been updated just before the release of the Galaxy class, the ship still suffered from older designs, and her phaser banks just didn't give as much energy as a phaser array could. The class was heading for retirment when the Dominion threat began. It was then that Starfleet began to update their old ships. They gave the Excelsior a new computer core, as well as more modern phaser banks (impart based on the more compact pulse phaser of the Defiant class), allowing it to present itself as a stronger opponent. It was also armed with Quantum Torpedoe bays, since the class had large bays which was easily converted into the QT tubes (newer photon bays are smaller and were not capable of being adjusted). This allowed the class to carry heavy firepower. To further push the class back into service, the impulse engines were refitted to make them more effective and less energy costly. Although it served well in the Dominion War, the class is slowly being phased out of service, and in about twenty years, ciritcs believe that the class will be gone from the lines. Finally, the Steamrunner is the newest cruiser to the UFP family. Although not as poweful as even the Excalibur III, the class is predicted to go into a refit soon to make it more effective. Unlike the Excalibur III however, the Steamrunner has better defensive capabilities, and speed. The drawbacks are the weaker offensive armory, and the warp speed. The ship, although able to obtain warp nine, cannot hold it as long as other ships. However, as was stated by the Secretary of Starfleet Defense (SoSD), the ship was meant to draw away fire from the larger battleships, hence their more advanced shield generators. Still, the ships took a heavy pounding during the war.

The Romulan Star Empire has also come out with a new class design, a ship that is suspected by some to replace the loss of the D'deridex's during the Dominion War. I speak of, the Valdore of course. The Valdore are heavy cruisers with regenerative shielding, and two forward plasma torpedoe launchers capable of heavy rapid fire. The ship is noted to be much smaller than the D'deridex, and is far more agile. The ship is noted to also have a more modern core, allowing them to dish out a heavy volley with their pulse disruptors and plasma launchers. However, one notable issue with the design is that its defenses are also low. The armor, although thicker, isn't as sturdy as UFP desgins, and the shielding is still lower than a ship of its class. The SoSD sujested taht the reason for this is because the warbird focuses on speed and a heavy forward assualt, much like a fighter. He claims that the design is a modification to the flaw of the D'deridex, which held these flaws, as well as being incredibly slow. This improvement he claims, will allow the D'deridex class to remain in service and enhance their heavy firepower, while the Valdore pick off any ship that would attempt to take advantage of the D'deridex's flaws.

The Vor'cha is a 24th century klingon heavy cruiser meant to rival some of the stronger UFP ships. The ship has amazing speed and offense, but once again lacks the defensive shielding of most modern A-B ships. The second flaw is that the ship uses older materials for their hulls, thus forcing the Klingons to shift extra power to the SIF, as well as putting on thicker layers of armor. Still, the class is a solid design, and has paid off for the Empire.

The borg have their own heavy cruiser; the Borg Cube. The cube is capable of easily destroying 40 UFP ships without breaking a sweat. This ships is also the most seen design, and often used in planetary invasions. Because of this, the cube is the most feared ship in the galaxy. The cube has at least eight plasma torpedoe launchers, 12 tractor beams, and at least 12 phase lasers (a laser that can't be deflected by navigational deflectors).

The Dominon heavy cruiser is the V-Type, a ship often used to support the larger battleships, as well as pick off the weaker light cruisers. These ships are fast, agile, well shielded, and carry at least two burst three torpedoe launchers.

The Cardassian Union has the Keldon, perhaps the weakest crusier known to the major alpha powers. The cruiser has one main phaser bank, as well as perhaps two or three others used for defending its flank. It has two plasma torpedoe launchers, but they lack the firepower of their Romulan counterparts. These ships are often easily dispatched by their Alpha counterparts, even by light cruisers.

Light Cruisers (For sake of time, I will not do every single one):

The UFP light crusier is the Norway and the Saber, both of which are part of the Anti-Borg program. Both of these ships are fast, well armed, and have prototype regenerative shielding. These ships serve to assist larger ships, and guard them from other cruisers. The most famous of cruisers however, is the aging Miranda IIII, which is rumored to being retired soon. The ship is agile, well built, and sturdy. The issue is that it lacks the armory of the more modern light cruisers, and also lacks the room for the more powerful and efficiant warpcores. The armor is old, and the shield grid is too dated to be replaced. The cruiser is suspected to be put out of service in 12 years at the most.

The Klingon Empire has their own focus of light cruisers, mainly the K'vort, and the K't'inga. The K'vort is a somewhat uncommon bird of prey that was scaled up in order to bring out a more effective starship. The test proved to be somewhat less than desired as the ships were larger targets, and weren't nearly as agile. While the firepower was increased, the shielding and the armor wasn't nearly as effecient as it needed to be for a ship its size. The third ship is the K't'inga, a basic upgrade of the older D-7 series, which is sourly outdated and easily destroyed by most scout ships to this day.

The Borg have two light cruisers. The first, and most common one is the Sphere, a ship often used to patrol Borg territory, scout for new worlds to assimilate, and targetting interesting ships. The sphere is easily a match to most heavy cruisers, possibly even battleships. The second is a Multi-Kinetic Neutronic Mine Ship, which is used by the Borg to detonate a powerful explosion with a shockwave up to five lightyears. The ship and the drones aboard are sacrificed, but the targets are easily obliterated. The ship has heavy shielding, as well as heavy weaponry, in order to keep the loss of the ship (which is suspected to be somewhat cost for even the Collective), and thus, they are also a very deadly foe despite their classification. They're easily capable of outclassing a Galaxy II series battleship.

The last light cruiser is the Galor, a very pathetic ship which easily takes damage from UFP fighters. The ship class has gone through at least four overhauls by the Cardassian Union, but the ship is still easily beat by a swarm of runabouts, or heavily damaged by UFP fighters.

    Scouts:

The UFP's scout ship is the Intrepid class, which is desinged for a short ranged missions, but is fairly well armed. The ship is the testbed for several new key systems, and has new advanced warp nacelles for faster tarvel, with less damage to subspace. The ship also has two navigational deflectors.

The Romulan Scoutbird is a somewhat weak ship that has heavy offensive firepower. It has two disruptor cannons, and one plasma torpedoe launcher. However, despite this, it has weak shielding and armor, lending credit to the theory that the ship is meant to only sneak attack, and should it face stiff resistance, flee.

The Klingons have their own Bird of Prey March III class. This class is well known as the trademark ship of the Klingon Empire. They are fast, well armed, but light shielded with thin armor. Despite this, the March III are easily one of the best examples of solid ship designs, as it has lasted for a century and shows no sighn of being retired.

The Borg scout is the Borg Probe, often sent to sneak around an area of interest to the Borg before returning home. The probes are very strong, easily capable of overpowering a light cruiser. It is suspected that only a heavy cruiser is capable of defeating this ship.

The Dominion also has its own famous set of cruisers, that being the Jem'Hadar attack ships. The ships are infamous for their great numbers, and tendency to travel in threes. These ships have low shielding, armor, and offensive power, but if they find a prey without proper protection to their weapons, they can easily become a threat to even battleships.

    Destroyers
The UFP has only but one destroyer; the Defiant class. The Defiant class is perhaps the most spine chilling ship that the Starfleet has ever produced. The ship is intimidating, and despite its small size, is capable of generating power equal to the Galaxy class. The Defiant has heavy shielding, ablative armor, four pulse phasers, two quantum torpedoe bays, two photon torpedoe bays, and two phaser banks. The ship is incredibly agile, and has shown to be equal to most heavy cruisers.

The only other group to hold a destroyer is the Cardassian Union, who mass produce the Hidekie class. Sadly, this class is hardly a threat to most runabouts, and is often grouped together with two other ships to actually make it a threat. These were seen in the Dominion War as cannon fodder and early ramming tools.
