I agree with Pearce. I wish illegals no harm, but they need to come here without breaking the law. I hope this new legislation is looked at by other states. Its hitting the employers, as it should.

And that woman who says illegals live in terror...I just wanna ship her to Iraq. That's what living in terror is.

Illegal immigrants in Arizona, frustrated with a flagging economy and tough new legislation cracking down on their employers, are returning to their home countries or trying their luck in other states.

For months, immigrants have taken a wait-and-see attitude toward the state's new employer-sanctions law, which takes effect January 1. The voter-approved legislation is an attempt to lessen the economic incentive for illegal immigrants in Arizona, the busiest crossing point along the U.S.-Mexico border.

And by all appearances, it's starting to work.

"People are calling me telling me about their friend, their cousin, their neighbors -- they're moving back to Mexico," said Magdalena Schwartz, an immigrant-rights activist and pastor at a Mesa church. "They don't want to live in fear, in terror."

Martin Herrera, a 40-year-old illegal immigrant and masonry worker who lives in Camp Verde, 70 miles north of Phoenix, said he is planning to return to Mexico as soon as he ties up loose ends after living here for four years.

"I don't want to live here because of the new law and the oppressive environment," he said. "I'll be better in my country." He called the employer-sanctions law "absurd."

"Everybody here, legally or illegally, we are part of a motor that makes this country run," Herrera said. "Once we leave, the motor is going to start to slow down."

There's no way to know how many illegal immigrants are leaving Arizona, especially now with many returning home for normal holiday visits. But economists, immigration lawyers and people who work in the immigrant community agree it's happening.

State Rep. Russell Pearce of Mesa, the author of the employer sanctions law, said his intent was to drive illegal immigrants out of Arizona.

"I'm hoping they will self-deport," Pearce said. "They broke the law. They're criminals."

Under the employer sanctions law, businesses found to have knowingly hired illegal workers will be subject to sanctions from probation to a 10-day suspension of their business licenses. A second violation would bring permanent revocation of the license.....

I especially had to laugh at "oppressive environment". They never had it so good.

It just makes me furious. If its so oppressive and terrorizing, why flee Mexico? Why aren't Americans sneaking across their border?

Interesting. The consequences of this, both intended and unintended, will have to be watched closely. But this seems to confirm what has been conventional wisdom for quite some time; with no hope of employment, they won't come.

You rednecks need to understand that the difference between the standard of living in the USA and Mexico is greater than between ANY OTHER TWO ADJACENT NATIONS ON EARTH. Iraq and Turkey, Poland and Germany, Egypt and Israel, Albania and Greece, Bangladesh and India, even NORTH KOREA AND SOUTH KOREA. You need to understand that "poverty" in Mexico means POVERTY. No unemployment insurance, no AFDC, no GR, no welfare to speak of, no Salvation Army with beds and food for everybody who can walk in, no city folks overflowing with noblesse oblige toward the homeless, no liberal establishment with a 231-year history of fighting racism (in Mexico it's against people with Indian blood), NOBODY WHO GIVES A DAMN.

(That's not quite fair. There are lots of nice people in Mexico. But the assholes who run Mexico make the assholes who run America look like saints. And those assholes have been supported by our assholes for decades so don't start ranting about how "the Mexicans should clean up their own country." They've never had the chance. They actually fought a revolution and wound up with the oxymoron of an "Institutional Revolutionary Party"--here comes the new boss, same as the old boss.)

There are people in Mexico whose families are literally starving, whose children literally cannot get medical care (and public health is one of the very few things that Mexico actually tries to take seriously), who literally never had the opportunity to learn to read, who literally cannot get work.

I assure every single one of you that if you were in that position, and there were a country RIGHT NEXT DOOR where even the people we call "poor" have houses that don't leak, cars, electricity, running water, heating, TV, telephones, schooling, government employees who check in on them regularly, where the easiest place to find a big bunch of them is eating dinner at MCDONALDS and their greatest nutritional problem is OBESITY...

And you kissed your family goodbye, paid every centavo your whole village could scrape together to some shady character who promised to take you there, ended up being abandoned, beaten up by brigands, having to walk there through a 105-degree desert, watching some of the people traveling with you die, but you finally make it...

And somebody in that country actually gives you a JOB because all the people who live there are to snobbish or lazy or greedy to do that kind of work, or because they have unions that prevent people from entering those occupations...

And then just as you're thanking your god for your good fortune--the same god these people pretend to worship--one of them starts yelling at you because in the process of preventing your children from starving you broke some stupid LAW that you don't even understand...

You would call that person a pendejo.

And ya know what? You don't have to be a Mexican to call him that.

You people are exactly the same demographic group that screams about how we're supposed to be RESPECTFUL and TOLERANT of Christianity. Well then dammit, START ACTING LIKE CHRISTIANS!!!

I don't have to go to a damn stinking CHURCH to understand that I should "do unto others as I would have others do unto me."

I swear, I'm going to start printing that bumper sticker: "Keep the Mexicans. Deport the Rednecks. Better food, cooler music, hotter chicks."

That's solid logic: illegals should be welcomed in whatever numbers they see fit to flood us with and anybody who disagrees with your subjective assessment of the situation is a redneck. How very intellectual of you.

You're right and if anybody disagrees with you then we can resort to name calling and insulting. Oh-- I know, it's not that we disagree with you, it's just that the truth is SO obvious and we're missing the higher, moral point that they are people in need and we should care more. The net effect is the same: people who disagree with your assessment of the situation are rednecks, racists, etcetera.

You know there is a simple explanation for the MILLIONS of Americans who are upset at the mass illegal immigration to the USA: at this current rate, it's swamping the system, overwhelming communities and despite what liberals want you to believe, it isn't good for the economy. Americans wanting the USA to remain culturally Anglo-Saxon is not any more racist than the Japanese wanting Japan to remain cultural Japanese. There is a seismic shift going on and it's no more healthy for the nation than what true racists want.

Sympathizing with the plight of poverty stricken people does not mean we should shame ourselves out of a country just to feed foreigners.

Finally, this is the only real way illegal immigration can be fought. Instead of targeting illegals, target those who hire them. Remove the incentive to come here and you'll start seeing a decline in illegal immigration. I'm glad to see this line of thought actually being put into action.

Tougher immigration legislation is supported by the VAST majority of Americans, so to come here and spew this "redneck" crap is "absurd". Illegal immigration is exactly that, illegal. There are legal ways of getting here, and those regulations are in place for a reason.

Without them you have no clue who is coming over, what they've done in Mexico, nothing. Are these people thieves, muderers, rapists, gang members... we dont know and I guess we should care either? Im all for a better life, but if your not willing to go through the propper procedures and respect the country your migrating too, then you should be allowed here.

Illegals are also a strain on the economy. Most are paid under the table, meaning not paying taxes. They get free healthcare, which WE are paying for. Ayn children they have here automaticaly entitle them to more free money which they didnt contribute too, since they are here illegaly ect ect. Think before you speak next time, or just crank up the Rock and go back to the kiddie table.

I bet the Jamestowners would have something to say about legal papers.

If the Native Americans that welcomed the Jamestowners when they arrived, didnt' want them on this land, they should have turned them away.

Fraggle, when shit like this happens, it makes all of what you said above a moot point...

    http://inkslwc.wordpress.com/2007/09/23/illegal-immigrant-kills-phoenix-cop/
What do you have to say about that, Fraggle?
I doubt cops, especially AZ cops, are going to take it easy on any illegal immigrant now. It just disappoints me that it took something like this for cops to start cracking down. I also hope that every cop in the country assume this mentality.

And I think you have a very skewed misconception of why some of us are so anti-illegal immigrant.

This is how most people who are against illegal immigration think:
-they don't mind immigrants coming to this country. In fact, they welcome all people who want to come to this country (legally) and make a better life for themselves. It's what this country is all about; land of opportunity.

-what they don't like is someone sneaking into this country illegally with the intention of NEVER trying to acquire legal status here. They don't have to pay ANY takes, they enable their employers to cheat the government out of paying taxes for their employees. That also eliminates those jobs for any legal citizen or resident; because they just can't work for the super low/tax-free wages that shady employers pay illegal immigrants.

So, if you're going to come here from some other country, you're more than welcome, however, do it legally and don't threaten our country while you're here.

How, pray tell, how on earth do you confuse that mentality with just a plain ol' racist mentality?? Why are you calling people rednecks for that?
I'm not Christian, I'm agnostic, and I fully support them kicking out every fuckin illegal(that is making no effort to get a visa or citizenship) in this country.

Because immigration and colinization are two entirely differenet things.

And comparing circumstances from the 1600s to the current political climate is patently absurd.

This is just Sam being Sam and wasting everyone's time with her useless attempts to demonize the US at every turn.

Hmm I always thought Jamestowners were immigrants. I had no idea they came expressly to colonize.

it wasn't against the law then. Its against the law now. They are knowingly breaking the laws we have now. It wasn't illegal to do drugs then, it is now. It wasn't illegal for children to drink then, it is now.

I don't know why people always compare now with 200+ years ago.
