That Ercoupe was the first airplane I ever owned. For a lot of pilots, there's a tremendous amount of affection, obsession, and even lust involved in these things. Enthusiastic aviators do understand the distinction between flying machines and women, even though a great flying machine really lives, breathes, and responds to touch in flight. The gift of truly flying freely inspires great respect and gratitute for the airplane, and a realization that she's far more than the sum of her parts.

On the other hand, a mentality or attitude quick to bring fucking into conversations suggests unpreparedness to relate to airplanes or the opposite sex with finesse and respect. As a habit, this could make the most soaring experiences impossible, which is a pity.

 

Um, can I join in? That is one cool gf.... I dream of having one of those as a bf for years now.

 

The operative word root is significantly "friend", for those of us who have had one or more true ones. The Ercoupe was Honest and Lovely. Who could ask for more?

 

Um, is it true that people with slightly less than perfect vision are not allowed to fly an airplane? (if yes, damn, damn....)

 

I wear contacts. These days, there are new fighter pilots who have had severe myopia that was cured by lazer keratotomy. For civilian flying, any correction to 20/30 or better (I get 20/15 with my contacts) is fine, and complete color blindness is not disqualifying, but requires a waiver. If you do not use a CNI dog, you can learn to fly.

The most important thing to do if you are interested in learning to fly is to go to an airport. I'll also start a thread about flying, if you want to ask me anything you're curious about.
