There are facets of government that will never be entirely privatized. Fire, sanitation and police are just a few. Of course this doesnt mean they are socialist.

Exactly. They're just funded by taxes and administered by government employees.

    Nothing socialist about that.

Republics are slightly socialist in their very nature. People banding together to form a republic that protects the rights of the members. The problems happen when the bureaucracy of government becomes heavy handed and intrusive to the point that the government no longer respects the rights of the individuals. When legislators are more responsive to special interests than representing the mutual well being of their constituents it is time to take a stand for change in the status quo.

Not all socialist ideas are bad ones. I think that's the main thing that many people need to realize. The same can be said about any type of government. Capitalism has its flaws as well. Balance is everything.

cutsie james is just like alot of australians i would assume. Ie bemused that these sorts of arguments against health care even happen. Most eroupian and commonwealth countries (if not all) have a compleatly different view about goverment. We view them as an institution first and formost there to provide service and services to the community and anyone who tries to absond from that duty will never win goverment. A good example of this is the liberal parties refusal until quite recently to surport medicare. Ideologically they opose it but everytime they have tried to put that belief into practice they have been terfed out of office. Another example is Margret Thatchers comments that "the NHS is as uncontrovertial as rights to vote for women", ie even under a compleatly rightwing goverment universal health care is concidered a human right.

I would have to agree that the OP is exactly the sort of flamebait tripe that should be unacceptable in any forum that values productive discussion. Which makes it doubly troubling to see it coming from a member with certain authority and responsibility.

See also: every thread I can recall madanthonywayne ever creating.
