Only yesterday CNN was proclaiming how the Taliban was being driven from their stronghold, victory was imminent, and military operations in Marjah would be over in another 2 days.

But troops complain that strict rules of engagement — imposed to spare civilian casualties — are slowing their advance into the town of Marjah in Helmand province, the focal point of the operation involving 15,000 troops.

...MARJAH, Afghanistan – Some American and Afghan troops say they're fighting the latest offensive in Afghanistan with a handicap — strict rules that routinely force them to hold their fire.

Although details of the new guidelines are classified to keep insurgents from reading them, U.S. troops say the Taliban are keenly aware of the restrictions.

"I understand the reason behind it, but it's so hard to fight a war like this," said Lance Cpl. Travis Anderson, 20, of Altoona, Iowa. "They're using our rules of engagement against us," he said, adding that his platoon had repeatedly seen men drop their guns into ditches and walk away to blend in with civilians.

If a man emerges from a Taliban hideout after shooting erupts, U.S. troops say they cannot fire at him if he is not seen carrying a weapon — or if they did not personally watch him drop one.

Troops: Strict war rules slow Afghan offensive

So, this "bogging down" is a sign of our humanitarianism.

A bit of very biased reporting don't you think? Here is a link to a more objective report. You know the good thing about teling the truth is you never have to worry about inventing it.

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/afghanistan/article7028205.ece

The truth is the operation is very nearly over. The truth is that the US and her allies gave 30 days notice to those in the area so that civilians could leave and not be harmed by the violence that would follow. That gave lots of time for the Taliban to prepare and set lots of boobie traps which they did.

The truth is that the US and her allies have been operating under severe restrictions. They must be fired upon before they return fire. That is giving the enemy the first shot.

Despite all of these restrictions, US and ally casualties have been very low.

Brian, is there a point to this? If anything it's showing how humanitarian we are that we havent levelled the whole damn taliban to the ground, seriously, one B-52, maybe two and all of the Taliban would be pushing up roses.

If your trying to claim that the Taliban are superior militarily to the task force they are facing than you need to get a reality check. Because the task force sent to fight them isnt even a fraction of the strength that could be brought to bare.

I'm not sure what your point is? That the big bad Taliban, between bonking goats, are somehow putting up a fight?

    PUUULLLEEASE.

This whole war is one big joke.
