New US Policy with Respect to China!

Good news, the US has after decades made new steps forward in its relationship with China. Previous administrations have just rolled over and played dead whenever China infringed on a trade agreement.

It seems President Obama is telling China that won't work any more. Obama has the radical notion that China should be held to its agreements. What a radical notion, but certianly a refreshing one from my standpoint.

I think it is long past time for the US to stop cowtowing to China.

Dont you think there are more important issues to deal with (like say HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES in china) than wether the US can pedle its junk?

Your comment Asguard reflects a certian lack of knowlege. The trade relationship is more than selling objects in China. Its about things like China not hacking into American computer systems and stealing source code. It is about China not stealing intellectual property. It is about China manipulation of currency. I understand these issues are a little more complex than the simple sales of product in China and therefore a bit more difficult for you to understand. So perhaps before commnenting in such a derogatory manner you would do a little research first.

And humanitarian rights, human rights, are a point of conflict between the US and China in which previous administrations have rolled over and played dead. Have you noticed, that Obama is now meeting with the Dali Lama despite protests of China?

What are the human rights abuses going on in China? Are you sure there are human rights abuses?

As for enforcing the trade agreement, kudos to Obama for that.

If you hadn't noticed: America is the virtual slave of China: We're in extreme debt to them.

Hey blashpemer, yes: The Darwinist atheists are whining about the Dali Lame-uh again, and at least they have the common sense to know that that man should be shunned for his standing by in his position of leadership while millions of Tibetans were severely oppressed and treated like trash by the ruling monks, even having their babies skinned alive and the skins displayed for a show. Shame on you.

And we should follow Obama's lead? Obama who isn't warning anyone about Iran's threat to strike the world on the 11th?

And how about we start making our own electronic goods which we keep buying from China like crazy, and risking our lives due to their poor environmental policy, and mining the yellowstone forests for the materials we need to stop trading with them, instead of just letting it sit there for people to walk through now and then (hardly beneficial), as if mountains need to be fed and need their health taken care of.

Not really, it is true that they hold a signficant portion of our debt. But it is also true that as long as we are their most important trading parther, they really don't have too many options in that regard. And China knows it. That is why they are trying switch to more organic growth versus export driven growth.

So the US does not yet have to be a slave to China. And it is great to see a POTUS who recognized that and has the ball to stand up to corporate interests and China to defend the interests of the US.

um the eroupean union is just as big a market (thankfully) as the US. You will notice i said thankfully and the reason is that Australia is a suprlier of resorces (and education) to china and india. Concidering the US is the big black hole of death (economically) at the moment anything which breaks Australia (even indirectly) away from US reliance is a good thing

LOL, you are funny Asguard...Black hole of death I suppose that is why the value of the dollar has been soaring these last few weeks as investors worry about the strength/ingegrity of Europe as they wrestle with issues like Spain, Greece, Portugal, etc. And I suppose that is why Australia is forced into raising its interest rates.

Despite our troubles, the US is still the place people run to in times of crisis. And the US dollar is still the reserve currency. And the US economy remains the largest and most stable in the world...even with all of our baggage.

Australian intrest rates are rising because our economy is strong, its as simple as that. If we were still tied to the US our economy would be falling but we arnt, its tied to china and india.

Obama has no leverage whatsoever on China. China owns something like $800 billion of US debt, and US needs China to support UN sanctions against Iran, which is against Chinese interests. How exactly can Obama pressure China to uphold any agreement? I've got a feeling the Chinese don't EVER do what they are told. These people are not the Chinese immigrants you see in the West. They are not demure / super polite / with low self esteem. The Communist government in China are very proud and selfish. Good luck changing their stance on anything.

China is definately selfish and very proud. When has China ever cooperated with the UN sanctions on Iran? China has had its way with the west for a very long time. Obama is saying to them we are not rolling over and playing dead like george II and clinton used to do.

The debt really has nothing to do with anything. It is a byproduct of trade. They have been running a huge trade surplus with the US. If they dump dollars the shoot themselves in the chest and they know it. And China is anything but self destructive.

So no better than the US then? Who put the interests of keeping the money
(or resorces) flowing into the US above the freedom of the people living there by keeping (or even PUTTING) dictators into power because they will "surport US interests". Hell there was even a CIA plot (wether it worked or not is debatable) to bring down an Australian goverment because they were to far to the left to suit the US. Then there is BinLardin, Sadam, the dictators in South and Central America ect ect

Do you have proof of an American plot to overthrow your government? There are do doubt elements in American society that are antidemocratic and corrupt - who do not act in the interests of the citizens of the American people. And that was the point of this post, that there has been a change in the presidency. We now have a president who has taken a stand against those interests. And that is a good thing. Those interests have been selling out the US to China. They are selling things that are not theirs to sell.

As for your economy it is not as robust as you think.

who said it was simply one president?

As for the plot against Whitlam

The fact that the CIA ordered ASIO to remove whitlam is true (the memo was in the public record) however im not convinced as to the success of the operation

Maybe that's one of the reasons Obama want's to drop NASA's program to return to the moon, a "little" give-in for China's moon program.

How do you know Obama wants to drop NASA funding? He is being forced to make some difficult decisions because of the mess he was left with by Republicans. I am sure if we had not wasted money these last eight years we could continue full funding to NASA.

What would you have him cut instead?
